How do you feel about the name Bode?

We are throwing around boy names and so far we have Carter. If it is two boys, I am kind of digging Bode (damn Olympic fever). Yay or nay?

In case it matters, we have kind of an effeminate last name. My sister says that means we have to use first names that sound manly.

  • NMS.  Is that pronounced like Brody or more like "that doesn't bode well..."

  • Something about it doesn't bode well.

    Hardy har har. Sorry.

  • Hmmm. That's one of those names that can go either way... either cool, or dorky. I'm trying to imagine meeting someone named Bode today... and I'd think their parents liked the pot. It doesn't strike me as particularly "manly."
  • NMS. Sounds like a nickname.?
  • I really like it.  I think it's a cute name for a kid and a 'strong' name for an adult
  • i like it! it's definitely different, but I like it!

I thought this to myself..  LOL

  • I like it.  Makes me think of Bode Miller.
  • Okay I think the "doesn't bode well" has changed my mind. Thanks!

  • My son is Bodie. DH and I are both named after relatives and wanted to name our son something completely different. We gave him a "regular" middle name so if he didn't like his first name he could use his middle name. He is Bodie Benjamin. We like it. We joke and tell ppl he is named after Patrick Swayze's character in Pointe Break. The pedi asked me the other day if he was named after Bode Miller.

One thing that is fun though is there is a ghost town here in CA that is called Bodie that is a state park. We plan on taking him there someday. We didn't even know about the ghost town until after he was born. So, I have a son that is named after a ghost town, an olympic athlete and as DH puts it a bad a$$. LOL!

  • I love the name Bode! It helps when you know one you like as well. There is the cutest little boy who I  know named Bode, and I've always loved the name!
  • It's a little too "nickname-y" for me... as though it should be short for something more formal. I think it'd be mispronounced by anybody not thinking of the skier, too.

I tend to think of monosyllabic names like Grant, Cole, Nate, Jack, etc when I'm thinking of something masculine/manly/whatever... don't know why.

  • Naming twins is hard!
I have to say, I don't like Bode at all. First, I think a lot of people wouldn't be sure how to pronounce it (like pp mentioned). Second, I do think he'd get lots of jokes about "doesn't bode well" and get called Body a lot.

  • No way, Jose.

    Brody isn't bad, though.

  • I like it a lot.  My neighbor is throwing around the idea of naming her next baby Bode, only she was thinking of spelling it Bodhie.  I like Bode better :)

  • If DD had been a DS, her name would have been Bodhi (as chosen by DH)
  • nms. I prefer stronger names for boys.
  • Not a huge fan of it.
