Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

My intuition was correct

I've been worried about DS not talking and his many ear infections. Everyone has been telling me I shouldn't be worried and that eventually he will have word explosions, blah blah blah.

After having a hearing test at a pediatric audiology clinic today, I found out he STILL has fluid in his ears, he has some hearing loss and she likened it to trying to hear underwater.

So.. now it's tubes, just waiting to hear from the pedi.

  • Poor guy. Good for you for keeping on top of it. Hopefully this will solve things.

  • My DS had really poor hearing prior to tubes.  But at his post-op appointment after the tubes were put in, his hearing was perfect.

    Good luck!

  • My little brother had this issue. It turned out that red and yellow food dye and preservatives caused wax and fluid to build up in his ears.

(those are in pretty much everything.. at least back in the 80's.)

Obviously it's a long shot, that that is what's happening with your DS, but it's an idea anyways.  Hope the tubes help out.
  • This happened with my little brother. He had a zillion ear infections as a baby/toddler, and his expressive language was really limited. He went through a very brief bout of speech therapy when he was 2 or 3, and his speech was nearly flawless by the time he went to kindergarten.

So glad you figured things out for your son!

  • Poor guy. I'm glad you took him to get tested. I have a feeling that this is going on with our friends little boy but the mom is staunch against taking him to the docotrs. he's 2 has had alot of infections, barely says anything. he also walked late( really late) and he doesn't look at you when you talk to him.

    .

hmmm.  interesting.  who decided (and how was it determined) this was the cause?

how did the resolve it?  change his diet?  does he eat those things now?

  • How many words does he have?  He's around the same age as Adam and Adam's stuck at 4 words... mama, dada, ball and oh-oh.  He's also had many ear infections, but was found to have no fluid at the ENT.
  • Poor guy. Hope it all works out well.

  • Good luck with the tubes, DD just went through that and it was a piece of cake!
  • Try not to worry - at least you went to see an audiologist and found out now - and you can fix it before it becomes too much of an issue.

My DD had tubes at 10 months - I was convinced she couldn't hear well but the pedi said 10 months was too early to worry about speech.   Come to find out from the ENT she had fluid build-up just like your DS.

At 10 months, my DD was not babbling and would ONLY growl.   After tubes, it has improved (albeit slowly at first).

Some people will tell you there LO started babbling on the way home from the tube surgery.   It took my DD a month after tubes to really start babbling but she is doing really well with speech now.  GL!
