2nd Trimester

H1N1 shot - sickness afterwards?

I had my shot back at the beginning of November. I got the shot on a Friday morning. Felt fine. Saturday was working and started to have a tad bit of red spotting. Laid down for two days and was very tired. Woke up Monday and was sicker than I've ever been. I couldn't even get out of bed for 5 minutes without feeling exhausted and dizzy, my entire body ached, head ache, SEVERE nausea and throwing up. This lasted until the following Sunday. So an entire week.

I was wondering if any of you had this happen and also if you think since every pregnant woman gets the same dosage if body weight has any thing to do with it? Meaning if someone that weighs 100 lbs and someone that weighs 200 lbs and they give the same dosage, do you think that this would be something that they should have monitored?

  • I got mine in 1st tri and felt fine. I weighed about 145 at the time.

  • i got mine at 7 weeks and also felt fine. It takes a few weeks for your immune system to respond to the shot, so it sounds like you may have simply just caught something shortly after. Its a dead virus so I dont think body weight would matter much!

  • I got both the seasonal & H1N1 vaccine at my first appt (8 weeks) & didn't have any flu like symptoms.  Just some mild soreness in one arm (not sure which arm was which vaccine).  I weighed 138.

  • I weighed about 120lbs when I got mine and had zero reactions (except for the sore arm). It's possible that you picked up some sort of illness before getting the shot and that it was a coincidence that you were so sick directly after getting it.....
  • I got mine in first tri and ended up in the ER. I had a really high fever of 102 and spotting. Luckily everything ended up being okay, just a really scary experience.

  • No vaccine is dosed based on weight so like a PP said, it sounds like you just happened to pick up a bug.

  • I had my H1N1 shot this fall and felt perfectly fine afterward. Not even a sore arm. I was 128lbs when I got it. I personally don't think a low weight would impact the vaccine.

  • It's possible you had a reaction to thimerosal, if your shot had that in it.  Did you get a single dose shot/thimerosal-free shot?

I got a tetanus shot before I was pregnant and had your exact reaction to that shot.  My doc speculated I might be "allergic" to thimersol and that I should try to avoid it if possible in future vaccinations.

I want to note that I'm a big proponent of getting the H1N1 vax - I think the benefits totally outweigh the risks.  I got mine in first tri (but was lucky to find a t-free one).   So, I don't think any harm has been done to your baby at all; I'm just trying to provide info in case it helps ease your mind!

ETA: I didn't have the spotting and I also had a 102.9 degree fever.  Also want to add that it's possible my reaction, and yours, was a coincidence - I believe that.

I am sorry to say, but I am not certain if it did have thimerosal in it or not. It sounds like a reasonable assumption. It was just such a weird coincidence. But regardless, I did it and suffered the aftermath no matter the cause. Baby is safe, all that matters!!
