Multiples

Two weeks ago 1 sac, now 3 sacs!

I am reposting this from first tri to see if any multiples mommies can help. I am so frustrated with all this waiting.  My last period was around December 21 which would put me at 8 weeks. However, I am breastfeeding so the doctor says I could have ovulated late. 2 weeks ago I had an ultrasound and saw 1 sac but no heartbeat. Yesterday we saw 3 sacs (yes, 3) on the ultrasound. Doctor says that two of them look good and one of them is a little irregular sized. Still no heartbeats. I have to wait another week and go back for another ultrasound. She said if she can't tell me something definite then she'll send me to a specialist where they have more advanced equipment. I just want to know one way or the other. Is it going to be one baby, two, three or none? She tested my beta level again and it's at 26380 which is good. I asked the doctor if she saw any fetus and she said that she thought she saw 1 but when she looked for it again she couldn't find it.

  • I would insist on seeing that specialist as soon as I could.  I wouldn't (couldn't) wait on answers like that for another week.

  • By 8 weeks,I would think your dr. should be able to detect heartbeats, be it 1 or 3 of them. I would definitely go see another this wk dr. versus having to wait it out another week and not get clearer answers. GL and please keep us posted.

  • How ancient is your OB's equipment.  Get a referral to a specialist (an MFM) right away and get a high resolution scan.  By 8 weeks there should be a heart beat(s) and she should have been able to tel how many babies, even if you were only 6 weeks along.

  • i agree- you need to see a specialist NOW - not your OB again - obviously the OB either has crappy US equip or doesn't know what he/she is doing.

the earliest you will see sacs is 5 weeks... and at 6w you would see heartbeats, assuming the US equip is decent.  If you are indeed 8w (at the least you are 6-7w) then you should be seeing HBs on decent equipment - i would not wait at all for your OB - again, b/c there is something wrong with the OB's equip or knowledge of pregnancies that early on.

even if you can't get a specialist appt as fast as the OB - make it b/c if you do have trips in there- you will need to see one anyway.

    let us know what happens!

  • just wanted to say good luck and hope you get some answers soon!!

  • I was breastfeeding when we got pregnant with our twins and also didn't know if it was a viable pregnancy at the first u/s.  At that time I thought I should have been around 6 weeks based on my last period, but we only saw a sac and yolk sac.  Doc had me come back 2 weeks later and we saw 2 babies with heartbeats.

Did your doc see any yolk sacs?  Did you get 2 betas drawn 48 hours apart, or just the one?  I would also ask to see a specialist sooner because it seems like your doc should have been able to give you more info at this point.

  • If it takes a while to get in with a specialist, try getting an u/s done at a place that just does radiology. I don't know where you're located but there's a place near me in MD called American Radiology. They do x-rays, u/s stuff like that. They should be able to u/s you and date the pregnancy.

I was 5w when we were able to see both sacs at my RE's office with his basic equipment and 6w1d when we were able to see our twins' heartbeats at American Radiology with their super fancy equipment.

    Good luck!

  • I agree with all the previous posts.  My OB's equipment was able to see the heartbeats at 6w6d.
  • I took your advice and called the specialist. The receptionist said their first available isn't until March 5. I took the appointment but will be calling every day to see if they've had a cancellation. Maybe they will get sick of hearing from me and fit me in sooner. Thank you ladies. I'll keep you updated.

To the person who asked about the beta...I had it checked at the end of January and it was 780. It's now 26380.

  • I cannot imagine what you're going through!!!  I'm so sorry you have all this worry and waiting. I would be a mess.

Best wishes!!!  I hope everything, and everyone in there, are ok!!

  • March 5 seems far away. But I am impatient.  Are you able to get into another OB as you wait for the specialist.

I called my 2nd doc today an OB closer to home- (my 1st doc is a RE).  It usually takes weeks/months to get into her.(the OB)  I think because I mentioned I was pregnant w/2 they put me in for this coming Monday.  They have not yet seen me and seemed willing to work me in sooner.

I hope you can get in to see someone sooner.  GL and keep us posted.

  • At 6w, my doctor only saw one sac - no fetus, no HB.  At 7w2d, the doctor saw two babies, 2 HB!

I don't know if this helps, but I just thought you may want to hear!

    Keep us updated!
