When to find a pediatrician?

Hi Ladies!

I was hoping to get some advice on finding a pediatrician. The first question is - when should you have someone in place? Second are they receptive to you kind of interviewing them before the babies are born? Also I am curious what questions are important to ask - specifically as it relates to twins? And finally - did your pedi come to the hospital after you deliver? The pedi I am looking at only visits the local hospital - and we are delivering in the city where the best NICU is. Is that a problem? So sorry for all the questions - but I need help on this one!

 Thanks!

Re: When to find a pediatrician?

  • 1 - Have someone in place before they're born.  When before they're born is up to you.

    2.  Yes, most pedis are receptive to interviews beforehand.  I don't have any questions to ask about twins, as we already have a pedi from DD.  If it concerns you, the one thing I can think to ask is about their vaccination policy, and if they're willing to delay any should that be something you want to do.

    3.  No, my pedi didn't come to the hospital.  I delivered DD out of their jursidiction (if I'd delivered at the local hospital, they would have come there).  We simply saw the hospital pediatricians before we were discharged, and saw ours when we were home.  Definitely not a problem to deliver at a different hospital!

  • -Find someone as soon as you can to secure a pedi before they are born. I called around 30 wks (you could do sooner!!) and got an appt. to be sure just in case I delivered early.

-You can interview before if that will make you feel more comfortable. I personally didn't but I was referred to our pedi by my RE (he took his own kids to this dr. and so I trusted his opinion). I'd make sure that your pedi is able to see both babies at appts (i.e. they can give you time for each baby).

-My pedi didn't come to the hospital, but someone in his practice did. My girls were discharged on a fri. and we saw their pedi on sat. morning.

  • - I asked and my OB told me around 28 weeks I should start looking.

    - Yes, they were open to interviews - and I'm glad as the first one I interviewed I didn't click with - the second one I did.

    - I have a list of questions in my blog (should still be on the first page; link in siggy) As with twins, I made sure they each got their own appointment time, and the doctor said they would most likely come in earlier after being discharged from the hospital (I don't remember the reasoning behind that). Also if any NICU time the doctor will come by the hospital daily to check their progress and see how they're doing and then come see/talk to us about it as well.

    - The pedi I chose will come to the hospital after the babies are born; I liked that they did a lot; I was told that our doc will come see them/us and that if they end up in the NICU for whatever reason they will talk with the NICU doctors and see the babies/us daily. They explained that they want to know what/if problems there are from the get go.

  • I had someone in place 3 weeks before the baby came.  They did not come to the hospital but I was comfortable with the on-staff pediatricians and they gave all of the babies info to our practice.

I didnt interview the pediatrician ahead of time. I intended to but ran out of time. Instead, we made our first few appointments (2 day, 2 week, etc) with several of the different pediatricians on staff so I was able to meet them and get a feeling for who I liked.  After meeting 3 or 4, I selected one and we are meeting exclusively with her for well visits.

  • Thanks for the info everyone! And especially for the list of questions on your blog - those are great!
  • We found our pedi around 33 or 34 wks.  We were down to 2 places before that based on friends recos.  We went to the offices at 33/34 wks and met with one of the dr's and decided at that point.  Our pedi did not come to our hospital, because their office did not have dr's on staff at our hospital.  We did see the staff pedi's at our hosptal, which gave us their file to give to our pedi.  If the hospital you are delivering at is far from your pedi's office, I doubt they will come, but it's worth it to ask.
