Natural or C-Section no other choice

I want to start saying that I don't mean to offend anyone. I'm not against using drugs or going drug free or scheduling c-sections...to each it's own and I'm not one to be judging what a woman decide to do when they give birth. I just wanted to tell you girls my view on the whole epidural/natural birth situation.

Most women I know have gone natural either that or c-section. Now the reason is because in PR the epidural is not covered by the insurance and it costs $500 to get one. For me growing up thinking about getting an epidural when giving birth wasn't even an option, people just don't do it back home...I actually didn't know what an epidural was until I was like 20.

Now having said that 49.2% of the births end up in a c-section (yes that is almost half!) and for most women if they had a c-section once, they have to have c-sections for every birth after that, they don't even have a choice anymore...it's ridiculous! It makes me wonder if the reason people get so many c-sections is because they don't have the option of the epidural.

There is a big movement right now to make the insurance companies cover the epidural and there is another to reduce the number of unnecessary c-sections.

So I guess my point is, instead of trying to convince people that the option you are going for / went for / or had to do is/was the best. Women here in the US should not take for granted that at least you have options and a bit more control when it comes to giving birth.

  • yikes! Thanks for posting such an interesting cultural take.

I'm all for empowerment and options! I have always stood by the power of choice- and, equally believing in the advancements of modern medicine- I think all options, including epidurals- are an amazing thing.

  • Thank goodness for options!  I am very thankful for that.

Thanks for putting it all in perspective.

  • I am grateful for options. My son and I might not be here today if it wasn't for these options!
