I had the Paraguard. I hated it. I had pain when we had sex, and it was always in the right place, so I don't know why. I started bleeding one month and it didn't stop until I had it removed a month later. It was awful. Pain and bleeding stopped once it was removed. I asked if it had moved or something, and the doctor said no, it was in the right place.
I bled / spotted for about 4 mo after having it inserted. Which is normal. It was also really itchy up there for probably about a month, until the strings curled up around my cervix. Talk about an itch you can't scratch!
Once that was over, no real side effects.
I still have my periods. They are heavier than when I was on BC, but lighter than before BC. Same with cramps: worse than on BC, not as bad as before BC.
Honestly, I kinda regret it. The big plusses for us when considering it were: little / no periods, which hasn't happened yet and not having another LO for several years, but now I have major baby fever. And any time I have any pain, weird feeling, anything in my abdomen, or even just a random "symptom", I can't help but wondering if I'm that 1 in 1000 women that get pg on it, then I start worrying about how dangerous that is for baby & momma, all the what-ifs, etc. But maybe that's just me.
The first two periods were awful. Heavy and lots of cramping. BUT. I've had two more since those, and they've been back to normal. At first I wasn't sure that it was a good move, but now my body has gotten used to it and I love it.

Had Mirena inserted 6 weeks pp and have not had a period since. Mild cramping that day but nothing since. The only thing I could complain about, or actually my husband could complain about, is no sex drive. Other than that, no problems.
Insertion wasn't bad, but minutes afterwards I had really bad cramps and lightheadedness. If you take an aspirin or something before you get it in, I think you'll be fine. I wasn't warned to do this.
I get my period every month, but it's heavier and longer than it was before.
Knowing this, I would choose Mirena (since it eventually lets you stop having your period sometimes).

Ditto this about lack of sex drive. I did have to get it removed back in September '09 b/c it was getting expelled. But that was the only issue I had. I had no periods 6 weeks after insertion.

Re: Who has an IUD?
Paragaurd - I love it. I wanted to go off hormones & see what was going on with my body as I have always been highly irregular.
I haven't had any side effects.
