Multiples

Sick of singleton mothers giving me twin preg advice!!

I know this has to happen to 99% of you. And for those who have had a singleton AND multiples, you know how different that the pregnancies can be. Here are my vents....

1. I made it to 32 weeks (good for me, right??). When I say "hooray! another month left!" its not neccesarily me saying that I am HOPING my babies come at 36 weeks, but in a way - it is. I hope they MAKE it to 36 weeks at least, you know? My friends (singleton mamas) say things to me like "oh hunny, you have 8 more weeks left, you don't want your babies to spend time in the NICU and be all tiny".....i can't even respond to that, because chances are...well, you all know the chances.

2. I can't stand it when they tell me to get up and move around! "its good for your baby to have exercise sweetie"....yeah, well, when you were pregnant with your 8lb6oz baby, you didn't have to worry about barely having enough fluid and weren't on bedrest, so yeah, if i want to lay here on my bed watching reruns of A Baby Story all afternoon, I will.

and i just now realized i'm getting myself all hormally-bedriddeny worked up LOL so i will stop at #2

But i just thought i'd share my frustrations with all of ya.

Re: Sick of singleton mothers giving me twin preg advice!!

  • Yeah, that is annoying. (Especially #2! BAD advice!)
And um, 37-weekers and 38-weekers will most likely NOT go to the NICU. :P Do they realize that most OBs/MFMs consider it *better* for twins to be delivered at 37-38w rather than 40w?

  • you just keep doing what you are doing.  Laying around is the best thing you can do in the end - that's mostly what i did for the last 11 weeks - i was out of work at 27w and only did one thing per day - the rest of the day i sat on the couch all day.

and you can tell your friend that 36w babies often go right home - my singleton was born at 36w and came right home.

  • Thanks ladies, its just frustrating because I hate feeling like all of the women that don't know (simple because they just dont NEED to know about multiples or multiple pregnancies) are looking at me like I am ignorant for hoping my kids make it 36 weeks, are politely 5-6 lbs, and can come home with me.
It just kind of sucks sometimes that the only people that understand my reactions or my thought process are on this board or in my OB office. But i am thankful for both ;)
  • Amen!!  Most of my friends who have had singletons are like this.  They have no understanding of a twin pregnancy and think they know everything about 'all pregnancies'.  I admit, if I wasn't having twins, I wouldn't know a fraction of what I know now.

I have a friend though, who even though from the beginning I've adamantely told her that my peri & ob have recommended easy exercise 1st and 2nd tri.  And not to work on my feet past 24 weeks.  Well, she told me that they were wrong.  That exercising will prepare me for labor and standing on my feet will make me stronger for carrying twins.  She told me in the 2nd trimester that it would be great if I started running up and down the stairs to prepare me for labor.  And she always rubs it in my face that she was on the elliptical a week before labor.

WTF?  If I took her advice, these babies would have been born in the 2nd tri.  Who is she to tell me not to listen to a peri and OB?  Just because she's had 1 child.  And it seems like she is basically trying to tell me I am lazy.

People are ignorant and I've lost a few friendships this pregnancy due to it.   Try your best and ignore people who don't have a clue about multiples.  Or you can always direct them here and we'll put them in their place :)  Heheh.

  • i have 3 friends at work that had babies last year... they all worked up until the day they ahd the babies... my dr put me on bedrest (modified) at 28 weeks because of bad contractions... my boss wanted to know why everyone else could keep working and i couldnt.... hello??? twin pregnancies are soooo different!
  • *twitch*

    Oh, the memories.

I was actually glad to go on bedrest for PTL at 28 weeks because I didn't have to be around all the ignorant people anymore. =p

  • work was going to be my #3.
I'm finishing up cosmetology school, so I'm on my feet constantly all day long doing haircuts, color, pedicures, waxing, etc etc etc etc. I'm a workaholic and a perfectionist when it comes down to it, so I was standing working on someone's hair color or hunched over doing a french pedicure for hours at one time.
My OB knows this and she wrote them a letter putting me on leave at only 17 weeks (also when i started my heparin injections) and NO ONE could understand this. "Well so and so over there is 35 weeks pregnant...."
well good for so and so, her pregnancy isn't high risk! i wish i could work rather than be stuck in this bed all day long forever.

and then now i realize that my BP would probably be sky high by now if i had stayed around all those "know it all" girls.

  • Lol at your post.  I can relate, and I am early on in my twin pregnancy.  I am so tired of ppl telling me i "shouldn't be showing this early".  I want to say, 'are you kidding me?' Hmm And I want to say....I'm growing 2 babies! not 1.

And the "you need to go exercise" bit is getting old.  I look like this all day ----->Ick!.  And puking in the snow on the side of the road/sidewalk is not fun...just so I can get "some fresh air".  no thanks, I will stay resting on my couch.

  • sadly it often takes knowing someone who had their twins too early for people to truly get it.  My friend lost her twins after having them at 23w - they lived 4 and 5 days.  I knew damn well after that how serious i had to take my pregnancy - i did not play around at all. My friends were great about it- since they knew my other friend lost her babies... I was lucky so many of my friends understood that twin pgs are not so easy.
  • um...you can just tell them to shut up! lol

My girls were born at 31 weeks 5 days and I would never wish what we went through on anyone! So you just stay in bed! Thats the best thing you can do right now! Good luck :)

  • That advice really does stink!  I am proud that you made it to 32 weeks!  Only 4 more weeks to go!

  • Reading this makes me feel so much better.  I can't even walk up the stairs without getting winded.  I worked up until I went into labor with DD #1, but this is completely different.  I did laundry yesterday and it took everything I had and more.  Congrats on making it to 32 weeks!

SO good to know that I'm not alone!!  I'm uber sick of hearing "wow, you're REALLY big already..."  and "I didn't look like THAT until I was x-number-of-weeks pregnant... you're going to be HUGE!"  and "You're only 16 weeks pregnant, surely you can still do this/that/the other thing" ........Uh, yeah, thanks.  Sorry, but try carrying 2 and then you can comment.

  • I have been lucky that my close friends have been nothing but great...the advice they are giving is general preggo advice!  Work is another matter all together!

There are women here who stop by my desk DAILY to give me their SAGE words of wisdom and all that we should or should not be doing!!!  It's nuts!  I am ready to just wear a t-shirt that says "TWINS - LEAVE ME ALONE!"

But oh well...we are doing well and hoping it will stay that way but whatever my peri says goes and that is what you should do too!

    Good luck!  :-)

  • My cousin, who has one 4 yr old tells me to exercise all.the.time. And everytime she tells me that, i tell her that my doctor wants me to take it easy and twin pregnancies are different. It's beyond annoying.

  • I had no idea twin pregnancies were so risky until my own either.  You just don't hear about it unless you know someone who has gone through it.

You are doing the right thing! Don't worry about them - they obviously don't know.
