We're considering getting a night/nurse nanny for the first couple of months.  any advice for those of you who've used one?

TIA

  • I had a baby nurse with my son and will have one with my twins.  I will send you a PM about my experience.

  • Having a night nanny was some of the best money we ever spent!  We had one for 5 nights/week when DDs were 2.5-8.5 weeks old and then 3 nights/week for two weeks and then 2 nights/week for 2 nights.  We tried to do it on our own in the beginning, and even with my mom here, we were exhausted.  Having a night nanny let me get some rest and therefore I was able to take care of DDs the rest of the time and still feel like a somewhat human being.  Even though I would still get up in the middle of the night to pump, it was much easier and quicker to just pump and go back to sleep then change/feed/burp two babies (individually when they were that little) and then pump.

We had a wonderful grandmotherly type woman who still keeps in touch with us a year later.  Having her was also wonderful because it got me, and the girls, used to having other caretakers.  So, I think it may have eased the transition when they started daycare (for all of us!).  Good luck!

  • My mom is with me for the first month, and then my step mom for another month.  They are basically free night nurses for me... and SOOOOOOOO needed!!!!  I would not survive without the extra set of hands.

I'd love to hear your thoughts as well Biz.

We plan on getting a night nurse for the first month.  A judge that my H works with had one with his twins and she got them on a schedule the first month she stayed with them.

We have also budgeted for a nanny after that for the first year.

There's no way I can do three under 2 on my own.  I'm not even going to try.

  • This was my SIL's experience with a baby nurse, she didn't have multiples just one baby but I thought this info might be good for someone considering hiring help.

I don't know if the baby nurse was there just during the day or maybe lived with them for two weeks but SIL was recovering from a c/s and was disappointed bc the nurse didn't do any stuff around the house. I guess she was expecting help with meals, laundry etc. She felt like the baby nurse was doing all the baby stuff and she was doing all the house chores while recovering from surgery. SIL is looking into a postpartum doula for her next child, she wants someone to help her through her recovery, help with some of the house stuff laundry/meals and someone to help with the baby.

  • We used a doula for overnight help - money well spent. She took care of the babies, did laundry (ours and theirs) and washed bottles.
