Ok, so I am EBF right now and DD has never had any formula. I would like to keep it that way but I have rheumatoid arthritis and am eventually going to have to start taking my medicines to keep it under control. Right now, I am not taking any arthritis meds because they are not compatible with breastfeeding. My original goal was to breastfeed for 3 months. We've reached that and I am doing well enough that my new goal is 6 months. However, I am aware that I could have flare up at any time and have to start taking medicine again. The problem is that the possibility of having enough milk in the freezer to give her breastmilk from bottles and not use formula until she is 1 yr did not occur to me until recently.
I would like to start building up my freezer stash but don't really know how. I have a few days worth of milk in the freezer now. I went back to work last week. Currently I pump in the morning after I feed her the first time, then 2 or three times while I am at work (I usually go and nurse her at lunch). Due to the pumping in the morning I usually have about 3 or 4 ounces extra every day that I can freeze but I know that amount won't be enough to last for long if I have to stop BF. So, for you ladies that have done it, how do I build up my freezer stash? Do you add an extra pumping every day? Also, even though I double pump each time I only get about 4 ounces combined. Any advice on how to make that more? I did talk to a LC and she said I may get more over time as my body adjusts to me being back at work but I don't know if it will be enough. Thanks so much.
