Let me start off by saying, I do not have a problem with epidurals. If you want one, no problem. If you don't, that's fine too.
I'm watching an episode of Birth Day and it is presenting and incredibly biased view of epidurals. It is completely pro-epidural and makes it seem like if you don't have an epidural, you are foolish or maybe even stupid. One of the anesthesiolgists even said, 'in my opinion, there is only one choice. Why would you do something with pain, if you could do it with out pain?' They also are making it seem like an epidural comes with absolutly no risk. I mean, they are relatively safe, but there are risks.
Grr, just a vent. I would like a show like birth day to give a more balanced view of any medical procedure.

Re: Vent: Epidural bias on Birth Day
This is my view but I wouldn't push that on someone else. If you don't want an epidural it isn't my business, but I personally can't imagine not having one.
But, yes, I would be against any doctor saying there is only one choice to any patient when that clearly is not true.
Wow...thats crazy. That would scare me!
This.
They need people to take drugs so they get paid.
That said, I hope they drug me with everything legally allowed.
?
Yeah, I would like to have the choice to get one but there isn't an anesthesiologist always at the hospital so they don't give them if you are in labor. They will only call one in if you *need* it like having a c-section. The next hospital does them but they are an hour away. If I ever get pregnant I could take the chance to drive an hour to that hospital, my luck I wouldn't make it! lol
Yeah, that was my thought too.
and for the pp that said they only give epis to c-sections, I think that is wrong. I'm going to be a midwife, and I'll definately allow my patients to have an epi if they desire it. I think it definately has merit.

What happens if you need an emergency c-section? They have to have one there for a situation like that. This is really weird to me, I have never heard of it before.
That's what I meant by they would call one in. As in they would call in an anesthesiologist. They don't do elective c-sections either. You get a c-section if it is medically necessary or it is an emergency c-section.
Yeah, but sometimes c-sections need to happen in like 5 minutes...not able to wait long enough to call someone in. I am not questioning you at all, it just sounds weird to me.
I agree, it is weird. I don't know of any other hospital in Canada that is like this. Fortunately, we are moving likely within a year or so for DH's job and that will be the only reason I'll be glad to leave.
