Babies: 9 - 12 Months

SAHMs, what do you do when you are sick?

I have seriously not been this sick feeling for years.  I am dizzy, light headed, congested, etc and have to take care of DD (who is also sick).  When you are sick, what do you normally do?  Just suck it up?

We unfortunately don't have family around and our friends who could help are working.

  • And hopefully this makes sense, my head is a little fuzzy.

  • Suck it up.  No other real options, right?  Now that DD is older, she gets to watch TV with me while I'm sick, but when she was a baby I just hoped for good naps and sucked it up.  If I am really sick (like, vomiting so much I can't get off the bathroom floor sick and it is unsafe for me to care for the kids) then DH stays home from work, but that's only happened once in the 3 years I've been a SAHM.
  • I'm sorry you don't have anyone to call who could come over to help you. The few times I've been sick my MIL came over for a few hrs just so I could rest. Also, DH took a day or two off work (well, worked from home) so that I wouldn't get the baby sick.

    Feel better :-(

  • i'm in your boat right now.  in fact - i just told DH this morning how the days of drinking a bottle of nyquil and sleeping it off are long gone.  i have no time to be sick because i'm too busy taking care of DD.  it's tough.

i just suck it up - i wish i had family/friends that could help too.

  • I am totally in your boat. Both myself and my baby are sick AND I am taking care of my niece (5 months old) and she is sick as well.

At a time like this, the exersaucer and jumperoo are my best friends.

  • Unfortunately, i just suck it up. I've only been sick once since i've had DS, but it wasn't super fun. I hope you feel better soon! I would try and snag a nap when your LO does!

  • We have family nearby, but they work.  Generally I just deal.  In 2 1/2 years there has been one time I needed DH to take a sick day.  He is in grad school so mostly sets his own schedule except 1 weekly meeting, but he usually tries to only work on weekdays (longer days than some people though... 10-12 hours).  Even though nobody is counting his time we try to stick with him treating this as any other job in terms of working professional hours and minimizing sick/vacation time in favor of finishing his PhD ASAP.

  • Unfortunately, just suck it up. I was sick last week and it was awful! I napped everytime DS napped, and we hung out on the bed most of the day playing.
  • Yes I think we will retreat to the fetal position for the rest of the day. Hopefully tomorrow I can put my big girl panties back on and suck it up and get stuff done.  LOL
  • Suck it up. Sad

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • Plain old feeling like crap sick - I just deal with it. I take Dayquil, drink lots of OJ, and just try to encourage a lot of independent play for DS while I take it easy on the couch.

If I physically couldn't handle DS because of illness (vomiting, etc.) I would either ask DH to stay home - provided he could - or I would hope it was a Thursday so MIL could probably watch him.

  • I have hyperemesis, so unfortunatly Im sick every day. :(  I usually have to just suck it up and nap when she naps.  My parents will take her a couple hours on the weekends.   I also lay her in bed next to me with some toys so she can play while  I rest, which helps a lot.

  • I've been sick a couple times since SAH with DD.  I just suck it up for the most part.  I've put on cartoons or music to keep her occupied (sounds lazy I know) until I can get down on the floor and play with her more.  The one time I was really sick DH stayed home to watch her for the worst day of it.

  • I had this issue just last week--I was sick with a flu bug (sickest I had been in a long time) and was literally throwing up/on the toilet (sorry tmi) every hour all day. DH is in optometry school, so he just stayed home that day. I felt bad--he missed a test that he still hasn't been able to make up. If he ever couldn't miss classes I would just have to suck it up--we have no family around and only a couple of friends that aren't nearby.

  • I am extremely ill right now, and we also don't have anyone to help. Thank God DH is home for reading week this week, though he is sick too. We have just spent all day lying around, napping with DS while he sleeps, and then supervising him from the couch while he explores. We are exhausted.
