Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What are you doing with your LO's outgrown clothes?

I really want to save them in case #2 is a girl, but I hate how much space they take up in our basement.  The basement is getting so crowded with all the unused baby gear too.  I don't want to sell or give it away and end up having to buy it all again later, but I can't stand the clutter.

So what are your organizing strategies?  Or am I just doomed for a life of clutter?

  • i keep one of those huge tupperware bins in his closet.  as he outgrows things i put them in there.  when it fills up it goes in the attic and i replace it with an empty one and we start over.  so far, we have 5 HUGE bins in the attic.

  • I've been putting them in the XXL Ziploc bags, squeezing all of the air out and storing them in the eves in our 2nd floor.

  • We've packed them away for future babies. I put mine in big ziploc bags first so I could squish all the air out and then put the ziplocs in rubbermaids. You can actually fit quite a few outfits in this way. I'd totally try ziplocs first or any sort of vac bag to compact the clothes. GL!

  • Since h left, I won't be planning on anymore kids for a while.

I am keeping my favorite outfits of dd and will use all of the ones from her first year to make a quilt.

The rest of them I have donated to my moms friend at work.

Toys I have either sold on craigslist (the big ones) or will be saved for a yard sale this summer.

  • I have kept the cute ones that are in good condition for the next (if its a girl), given some to charity and then I am taking some old ones I don't like enough for the next and making a quilt out of them.
  • I use the space storage bags. They are great. Right now they are under her crib until my sister gets her crap out of my house and I have more storage. Then I will be able to put them in the closet in my loft.

  • So far doing the bin thing. We have a condo so I have no clue anymore where we are going to put all of this baby stuff for #2....might have to rent a storage unit sadly.

OMG... that's what I'm afraid of.  Once I transition her out of 6-12 month stuff, I'm sure we'll be filling up a lot more of those bins.

I just wish we had storage space.  No attic.  Just a basement, a finished basement (which would be really great if we could actually use it, but right now it's all storage).  Sad

  • I've been storing them in hanging plastic grocery bags that I label.  I'm hoping to squeeze them all into one box soon.  I have gone through some of the bags and taken out some clothes to get rid of.  I have also gotten rid of some of the baby gear that I don't like and wouldn't use again.

  • I have a closet organizer with about 5 shelves.  I put the old clothes on each shelf.  I think I am going to buy a large storage bin and keep it in the basement or get one that will fit under the crib.

That's a great idea.  Maybe I can actually get some use out of that vaccuum sealer I have downstairs.  LOL!  And then more will fit in the bins.  Genius!

I think I just found a new project for myself.

  • We're fortunate enough to have a storage space in our house, so I've been saving quite a bit.  I do keep a bag of clothes that I didn't love and will give that bag away at some point.  We'll probably keep most big toys since they'd be expensive to replace.
  • I'm giving them all to my sister, because we're only having DD and that's it. Hopefully my sister has a girl (whenever she decides to have a baby, not pregnant right now), or else we'll probably just donate the clothes.

  • Our guest room has a dresser in it, and i have been keeping the cute, in good condition clothes for the next LO incase its a girl. I have been storing them in there. But i suppose a storage bin will keep them... a little more fresher i suppose. Lucky we do have alot of attic space. My question is what do i do with the car seats and swing!

  • I have tupperware bins arranged by size and season.  They are stored in the girls closet.

  • I have a lot of storage in my basement.  I have bins for each size of clothing.  To keep things organized within the bin, I have grouped clothing of the same type (like onesies, pjs, etc).  I also put socks for each size in a ziploc bag in the corresponding bin.  I just started the bin for 6-9 mo. clothes as he is starting to outgrow them!

  • Giant Rubbermaid containers. We're not having another, so eventually I'll take them to the children's consignment shop and donate what they don't want or would only make me 50c. I'll probably give SIL some stuff too, assuming she has another before I get rid of everything.

  • Well for the time being I'm praying my friend who is due in April has a girl!!! :)

But they're all in big rubbermaid bins under the stairs in our basement storage room right now. I've got clothes from Newborn through 3T under there so I think I'm in good shape as far as storage space goes. We'll probably move things up to the attic eventually, though. All the gear that she's outgrown is already up there or lent out to friends/family.
