8 Week Postpartum, Muscle Separation Q

Did any of you have this and did it come back together on its own? Did you have to have surgery?

Did you do any exercises to help? I am afraid of doing the wrong ones and making the prob. worse!

 Please help :) Thank you!

Re: 8 Week Postpartum, Muscle Separation Q

  • I have it Indifferent. My girls are about 3.5 months old. my OB said that the bottom of my ab wall was still intact so it wasn't totally split.

she said to lay off ab-specific exercise (i.e situps, crunches, etc) for at least another month. she said i was getting enough core work from jogging/walking/elliptical. i was doing a ton of crunches prior to her visit and she said it would just make things worse for the time being.

she didn't talk about surgery although i have heard of people doing that with ab separation. She feels mine will correct itself (to a decent extent) with just more time (....patience is another story!?).

FWIW, I can tell a bit of a diff. since I first delivered. I have lost all my pg weight but the tummy area is still frustrating to look at. I'm hoping it will restore itself as I am not down with having surgery for it!

GL and hope yours heals, too!

  • My girls are almost 3 years old and I still have ab separation.  My doctor looked at it over the summer and said that there was nothing I could do to correct it outside of surgery.  I can do crunches, etc but those aren't going to make those muscles go back in place.
  • I'm still pregnant but worried about this as well.  I found this article (among others) when I searched for exercises.

  • Here's a dumb question... how do you know if your muscles separated?

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

When I sit up from a prone position and don't use my hands for support there is a bubble from the top of my stomach that starts from an inch under my sternum to my navel that rises. Also I can put my fingers in the gap. (Gross).

  • My boys are almost 18 months old and mine is still separated badly. I've had a consult with a surgeon and it will require surgery to fix it. He said not to do anything until I'm done having kids which won't be for a while as we want at least 2 more. So until then I use binders and waist cinchers and I dress very carefully. It really stinks cause I'm tiny - 5'2 and about 118, but I have this huge bulge in my abdomen.

I'm hoping to be able to afford the surgery in about 5ish if I'm done having children by then.
