Pregnant after a Loss

question about amnio...

I know the main reason people don't do this is because of the small risk of miscarriage.  but my question is, was this procedure actually what caused anyone here's m/c?  do you know of anyone who did miscarry from an amnio?  i know a lot of women who have gotten it and nothing bad happened.  of course, i don't want to be that small percentage, but i'm just curious if anyone here knows anyone that it's happened to.

Re: question about amnio...

  • I only have had one friend get an amnio and everything was fine.

I'm still terrified of an amnio and I declined one when it was offered to me.  It was offered to me because I'm 35.

  • I'm 35 as well and just starting to weigh all this genetic stuff.  I go for my NT scan next week.  Because of my age I know several women who have gotten it and tell me it's no big deal.  But I'm a little more skittish because of my previous loss.

  • I just had one last week, LO is okay.  Heartbeat strong and kicking.  I did know that m/c was a risk but for us it was an even bigger risk not to do it.  I'll be honest, I didn't even read the consent form.  They told me we needed to get one done right then and I never looked back.  I know that my dr wouldn't do anything to harm us and I trust him.  I will say it hurt though and I was sore for a few days afterwards.

  • I had one done around 20wks. I asked the doc doing it if anyone he had done one on had gone one to m/c. He said hes been doing it for 20 years and only 2 women m/c'd and something was wrong with those babies so they cant blame the amnio on the m/c. I was scared out of my mind and cried though the whole thing. There is a risk there and its something you have to discuss with your dh. Its a personal decision.

As for the actual procedure it wasnt bad, I got a pretty strong cramp as they were doing it but I was fine after that. And the doc asks to lay low and rest for 24 hours. Also no sex for 48 hours.

  • I had an amnio with my last pregnancy and it wasn't the cause of my loss (I had a D&E when the results came back with complications).  With this pregnancy I had a CVS and everything was okay also (both have the same percentage chance of a m/c).  I think that if you don't follow the dr's orders your chance of having a m/c goes WAY up.  Basically don't do anything too strenuous for about 48 hours after the procedure (some places say more than that) and you'll be fine.  I put myself on bed rest both times and I think that was a little much.  I probably could have done something but I was too freaked both times about losing the baby.  Granted you can't run a marathon right after, but you should be fine if you do light activity.
