At home, Clarol Natural Instincts semi permanent color. Its easy and my hair people have given me advice on what to do and avoid...ie go a shade or 2 lighter than natural color, don't put it on the ends. When its time for something more permanent ie I have LOTS more gray, I will do it professionally, but for now, happy with the cheap solution. I only started this after SC, I was lucky I didn't start going gray until 40.
I don't have grey (yet) but my mom does and I usually do her hair and this is what she uses for hers too, l'oreal excellence color. She's a retired hair dresser, sometimes she gets color from sallly's but usually we use a box.
I've done both. But I typically end up coloring it myself more often. (I've also been known to cut my own hair.) My colorist was just never able to get the red just right.
I use Feria in Cardinal. Started off with Nice and Easy and transitioned to Feria when it hit the market. Their reds are super vibrant and set quickly.

I have like maybe ONE gray hair, but I'm really interested in coloring at home. I'm so scared though. I'm not a big hair person, so I'm destined to screw it up.

You seriously cannot screw it up (aside from picking the wrong color). It's soooo stinking easy. Hair color has gotten to the point where you can practically pour it on your head and comb it through.

Ditto Myra, at home hair color is super easy these days. I change my hair all the time when I get bored. I go to the salon for highlights but if I'm doing all over color or a color touch up (to cover the grays I deny having) then I do it at home and its fast and easy.
Re: RE: If you have gray hair like Jody ; )
mom does mine...sometimes at her salon, sometimes are her home.
but, once i did it myself (can't remember why) and i think i used a clairol natural color based on rec's from mom.

Go to the salon--I am scared to do it myself. I do go to the New Talents side of Van Michael though to keep the cost down.
