Babies: 3 - 6 Months

weight question

I just found out that my friend is getting married in November this year, and I am due to deliver in August. I'm in the wedding party so I'll need to order a dress, but I'm just curious what happened to you guys after birth? 3 months later are you starting to get back to normal? Wondering about sizing issues for the dress.

If it helps, I'll be 22 years old and have always had a high metabolism. I am 5'6" and weigh 123 lbs pre pregnancy.

Re: weight question

  • Its really hard to tell.  Everyone is different, but if it helps by me telling you how I was, ok.

    I was 115lbs before baby

Was 155 when I gave birth

When LO was 3 months, I was about 120.

    I also EBF.

  • I just answered you in 0-3.
  • Everyone is different, but I gained 20 lbs. with my pregnancy, lost it all the first week, and I've lost an additional 15. I'm a size smaller than I was pre-pregnancy.

I attribute it to BFing because I'm still pretty much eating whatever I want, but I know BFing doesn't have the same affect on everyone.

  • It depends on how much weight you gain and how hard you work on taking it off.  Your shape can change a lot.  I know some friends that have gone back to the same exact weight as pre-p. but their clothes fit a lot differently, others it hasn't been too big of a struggle.  I have had a lot of difficulties getting back to where I want to be, but I haven't been dedicated to it either.  I still have 50 pounds to lose, but only about 20 of it is pre-preg.  You are small and you said you have a high metabolism so it might be easy for you.  Good Luck!! :)
  • 3 mos pp both pregnancies I was maybe a size bigger.  I'm pretty small framed but I have trouble dropping the last 10 until after I wean from BFing.

  • Everyone's body is different but something tells me you will be fine and lost it all quickly.

    ::::Rubs my crystal ball::::

Personally I'm still losing my baby weight and I'm about 4 months PP now. Maybe it has a lot to do with FF along with being at the higher end of average weight for my age/height when I got pregnant.

  • My advice would be to order a maybe a size bigger than you'd get prior to pregnancy and then schedule an extra fitting session.  You might get back to the same size by then, but I found that I am definitely "shaped" different now, and my hips are wider than they were prior to DS being born.  HTH!
  • OH and also consider your boobies! Cuz even though I can fit into my pre-pregnancy clothes, I cannot fit into my old button-up shirts and bras.  Maybe buy a bigger dress and have it taken in.
  • Well, I was a size 8 pre-pregnancy and now I'm rocking size 14, but I'm also almost 8 years older than you, I gained a lot of weight, and I'm not EBFing (I have a low supply and have to supplement). You're young and you have a high metabolism - I'm thinking you'll probably drop the weight pretty fast, and make fatties like me jealous. Stick out tongue

  • Don't rely on losing weight from bf'ing....I only gained 20 lbs. while I was pregnant, (I'm 5'8" an started at 127 lbs.) lost 8 immediately after dd's birth and the proceeded to gain the 8 back plus another 5. Breastfeeding made me RAVENOUSLY hungry....

  • BFing will definitely help if you plan on doing that. I have lost 46 lbs since DD was born, and am smaller than I was pre-pregnancy, but I have also been working pretty hard because I was unhappy with my size before and then gained 35lbs during the pregnancy, putting me over 200 Tongue Tied and on my 5'4" frame, I was HUGE! I still would like to lose another 30lbs or so, but am very confident I can do that.
  • You will probably be one of those lucky biitches who loses weight super quickly ;)

But don't count on BFing.  I EBF and it literally has done NOTHING for me.  And every time I tried to diet, my supply would plummet.  Finally, four months pp, my supply seems to be handling the lower amount of calories really well and I'm starting to lose weight.

I'd buy at least a size up.  That much can be taken in if need be.  But you might be glad you have the extra 'room'.  GL!

  • I was 140 Pre- Pregnancy and gained 28 lbs during pregnancy. By 2 weeks Post Partum I was down to 145 and at 3 months I was at 135. I also EBF.  I would probably order 1 size up if it were me in this situation. You can always alter it to fit but you can't make a small dress larger.

  • Very hard to predict because everyone is so different.  I gained about 35 pounds when pregnant and have lost it all now and I am 3 mo. pp (and 35!)...but my body is a little different- tummy not as tight and hips a bit wider, I think.  If you are motivated I am sure you can lose it!

  • I was back to my pp weight at about 2 mos pp and was like you. 5'6" and about 115 lbs pre pregnancy. I gained about 25-30 lbs total. I know that being in shape when I got pregnant and staying as fit as possible during my pregnancy is what got be back to prepregnancy weight quickly. Also, I will say that I didn't lose the last 5-10 lbs until I quit BFing. I think you're taking in so many more extra calories to produce that it's basically a wash.  Once I threw in the towel with BFing, though, (this is a whole other story for me...lol), I dropped the last 5-10 in no time because I was eating substantially less without even realizing it.

If I were you I'd buy a size or two up and just have it altered a week before. You can always remove material but you cannot add it, right? Good luck!!

  • Before my pregnancy, I was 5'3" and 114 lbs (a size 4). I was due in August and my brother's wedding was in October, and I was a bridesmaid. I had to order my dress in January, when I was only 2 months pregnant, and I had no idea what size to order. I went up quite a bit at the suggestion of the seamstress and ordered a 12, even though I was SURE it would be way too big in October. Well, I had to be fitted for the dress 2 weeks before the wedding, so about one month after giving birth. The 12 was exactly the right size for me because my hips were so wide at that point. Now I'm down to a size 6 and have only 10 lbs to lose, but back then I certainly needed the size 12. I recommend talking to a good seamstress--if it's a dress that can be significantly altered, go for a large size and bring it down to where you need it when the time comes. And get fitted as close to the wedding date as you possibly can.
  • I had to stand up in a wedding two mths PP. ?I made sure to order a dress at least one size bigger than my normal BM dress size. ?I was very fortunate in that I only gained 23 lbs with G, but even so my waistline was still very wide and I had a stomach pouch. ?By three mths PP I am pretty dang close to my?pre pregnancy?body. ?

  • Three months PP... I'd probably have ordered one size up than normal... just in case.  You can always have it taken in if you need to.

  • It's hit and miss for everyone.  I came home 2 days pp, and I was in my old clothes, and weighed less than I did pre pregnancy (I had GD, so I was on a specific diet and was losing weight from 28-38 weeks, wound up about 9 lbs up from my pre pregnancy weight, then lost about 20 immediately after delivery).  I don't think most people have that situation.
  • Like everyone else is saying, everyone is different.  I used to work in the bridal industry though, and we were told that when it comes to alterations, it is ALWAYS easier to take a dress in than to let a dress out.  So it's ok if you order a dress that's too big, that's fixable and I would suggest that.  If you order one that's too small, you risk looking like that girl that tried to stuff herself into a dress that wasn't her size.

  • I would go up at least one size, if not two. I honestly have no idea what size I am at his point, but I know its not me PP size. My guess would be a 12, although the jeans I have that are size 12s are starting to get a little loose. I just started losing weight again 3 weeks ago when I started to walk on the treadmill. EBFing did not help me lose any weight. At 6 weeks PP, I was down 23 of the 55 lbs I gained. Now I'm down another 12 at just over 2 months PP. So, I still have 20 lbs to lose and probably 2 pants sizes.
  • I was at my pre-pregnancy weight at 3 months PP. Actually I was 5 lbs from my pre-preg weight a week after I had DD. I gained over 30 lbs but most of my weight gain was from swelling, baby, etc. (But my pre-preg weight was 15-20 lbs higher than I wanted to be at!)

Everyone is different though, so it's hard to say. I would order it a little bigger. It's definitely easier to take it in than let it out (if it's even possible).

  • 124 before pregnancy (5'5")

    gained 50+ lbs.

at 4 months pp, I now weigh 126

    Breastfeeding

BUT even though I weigh just about what I was before, there is more in the middle of my body - my belly, my butt, and my hips... My clothes fit differently.
