My son James had a febrile seizure last Sunday and it was one of the scariest things I ever dealt with. They said he is now prone to them anytime he has a fever in the future.
I was just curious if anyone has dealt with them and if your child had one - did they have another one later on? Any tips or suggestions on how to watch for them or avoid them?

Re: febrile seizure - anyone w/ experience?
they are scary! i haven't had first hand experience with my own kids, but i'm a pediatric nurse, so i've seen it in other kids.
once they have one, there's always the chance of it happening again with another fever - the key to avoiding them is to treat fever at its onset before it has a chance to spike, and keeping meds in their system round the clock - not letting too much time lapse between doses.
My 3-year-old nephew had one this fall and hasn't had one since. Hopefully your LO won't have another one either!
I dont think this is common so I hope I dont scare you but my nephew deals with them and hes 6. He comes from a family who had epilepsy and his two younger brothers actually have a form of epilepsy.
I know for the 6yr old, he is constantly monitered. He has his temp taken every day. It can spike quickly. Anytime he gets sick, he can seizure and normally they will get him tylenol or a warm bath to bring down fever.
MOST grow out of them. Very common unfortunately and yes very scary.
Thanks for the input. We have our fingers crossed that that was his one and only but I know I am going to be watching him like a hawk when he is only the slightest bit warm.
I had never heard of them which made it even scarier.
