White Noise

Our caretaker has a white noise machine and DD falls asleep super easy for her naps when it's on.

DH and I have a really tough time getting her to take afternoon naps on the weekends and it takes me 1.5-2 hours to get her to sleep at night.

I'm thinking about buying a white noise machine for her room to see if this helps.

My concern is her getting hooked on it.  When do you stop using the white noise?  When you finally take it out of their room, are the sensitive to all sounds and become light sleepers?  Do they have a difficult time then going to bed?

  • I use white noise just to get DS to fall asleep on his own, instead of having to rock him.  After he's asleep I turn it off.  I didn't buy a white noise machine though.  I take my laptop in his room and turn on the volume to this website.

Just a little money saving tip if you're interested :)

  • I havethe baby crack machine and because of it my baby sleeps from 11pm till 8:30am every morning.  But I never use it during the day for naps, and I also never put her in her actual bed to nap during the day, I put her in the swing.  I'm trying to teach her to be able to sleep in different locations, teach her that bassinet and noise machine mean sleep through the night, and during the day she'll sleep through banging pots and pans, dogs barking, the doorbell, the tv, etc.

When they are this age, they can't comfort themselves.  They wake up during the night and need soothing.  For Allie, the white noise is what soothes her back to sleep.  So the white noise is the same idea as a swaddle or a pacifier or even just picking her up  at night when she cries.  As she gets older she should wean off of those things naturally to some extent, but I will gradually just move the white noise farther from her head, then maybe outside the room, then gone altogether.

(the reason the baby crack machine works is because it's louder than other white noise machines, if you put it right next to their head you can compare it to the concept from Happiness Baby on the Block.  The only way it really works is if you play it all night long, so that when they wake up like all babies do, they are soothed back to sleep.  For example, if  the power goes out Allie won't STTN, she'll wake up and need me to comfort her)

  • May I ask why people get concerned about their child getting hooked on white noise?  I say (for children through adults) if it helps you sleep go with it.  I used to listen to music every night (even traveling) from at least high school through about 5years ago.  I wasn't hooked on it, but I found it relaxing.  I'm really not concerned about myself or sons becoming light sleepers.

DS1 has one of those FP Aquarium things but the music is the only thing on (plays for 20'ish minutes).  He has nothing for the afternoons he is at daycare.  DS2 has the Homedics Sound Spa (rain or ocean sound).  I have it play 24/7 so I don't have to mess with turning it on or off.  It seems to help him sleep and it helps to drown out the noise of DS1.
