2nd Trimester

Why does everyone say 1 glass of red wine is ok?

This is my first-everyone tells me when we go out to have a glass of red wine that it is healthy, I have never heard this before. I guess it is personal opinion but are they referring to a glass in 2nd or 3rd trimester? Any thoughts on this?

Re: Why does everyone say 1 glass of red wine is ok?

  • Some dr's say it's ok, some say avoid alcohol altogether. Make the best decision for you based on what your dr. says.

  • It totally depends on your own comfort level. This conversation never goes well here, but I suggest you do off-bump research and decide for yourself.
  • My OB said if you are at a wedding, and really want a glass of champagne, or 1 glass of red wine, it will be fine.  However, no one really knows how much alcohol is too much; it is different for every person, and I assume every pregnancy.  So I choose to not take the risk.

  • Oh here we go again.
  • Its better to just not drink at all, in my opinion...

This, and for future reference.... whatever your stance is, stay out of the debate. It's like talking in endless circles no matter what you decide for yourself.

yep - I'm reserving my opinion since it just goes in circles anyways.

To OP - do what you feel comfortable with.

  • My own rule for anything I put in my body right now is : When your newborn arrives, will you put it into a baby bottle and feed it to him/her? So why would you feed it to her in utero? But this is just my take on the situation. I definatley don't judge people who do.

I just find this a funny philosophy, because I sure hope you are not onloy consuming formula or breast milk.  :-p  Just had to point it out...sorry!

I'm not going to put carrots in a newborn's bottle either.......but I hardly worry about eating carrots right now.

OP: Its about personal comfort level. Most countries (and even most OBs in the US) say a glass is fine. I personally am not comofortable with it but that doesn't mean its wrong.

that's fine, what about a toddler? would you put alcohol in to a toddlers bottle? Would you put coffee in to a toddlers bottle?

Again, I don't drink, but its not comparable. When you eat/drink something, it isn't directly inserted into the baby like a bottle would be. Its a bit more complicated and neuanced than that.

  • Some doctors say a half glass of red wine is okay in very late 2nd tri into 3rd tri after all the developing is done. they say this b/c there are any conclusive studies saying its bad, but there are little to no health benefits from having such a small glass of wine so why chance it? Just b/c they haven't done a study on it doesn't mean its safe.

Being a Dietitian and teaching molecular nutrition, and researching nutrition for over a decade, it IS comparable. Obviously, you don't understand the complexity of nutrition. It is only considered "safe" in very small quantities. Many studies are still inconclusive at what point it isn't safe and it becomes a risk for miscarriage? Why mess with it?
  • Talk to your doctor, not the bump. Some docs recommend a glass of wine for certain things (spasaming uterus post amniocentesis, etc). Personally I belive everything in moderation. I don't think a glass of wine will cause FAS nor do I think a cup of coffee will cause a miscarriage. Just use your head and talk to your OB.
  • Sorry, I wasn't on last night to comment then, but I am in the medical profession, and this discussion always frustrates me  because I hear a lot of opinions just get thrown out there, so I thought I would just give anyone who wanted more info some links to help them decide on the issue for themselves (they both have very good accurate information):

     https://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/brain/fas.html

    https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/fasd/index.html

In the end, we actually do know that alcohol (in the same form that affects your body) crosses the placenta and affects the baby, so when you drink any alcohol, it is actually like you put it some into your newborns bottle (maybe it was a drop, maybe a lot of drops, but you did put some in there).  And it is just like when you eat a carrot, your body breaks down the food through digestion, and absorbs the nutrients into your body, which is what goes straight to your baby to feed them (and those nutrients are the same things found in breast milk or formula).

Also, the major issue here with FAS is about timing.  Of course a single glass of wine at a wedding may not hurt, but your baby might not be at a particular "critical stage" of brain development during that hour that you have that drink... or maybe they will be, and those are the babies that are affected.

So here's what you must ask yourself: do you know when those hours are of critical brain development?  I sure don't... no one in the medical community knows, which is exactly why there is this debate.  So that is why everyone needs to make the decision for themselves,  But know that it's purely a game of risk & numbers, and since I know my risk is "0" if I don't drink at all, that's the decision I've made for myself.  FAS is one of the few birth defects that is 100% preventable, if I just don't have a single drink of alcohol while pregnant.

But again, you have to decide what "risk" you are comfortable with, so definitely do some of your own reading off this site, and get some facts first!

  • Why is it only red wine?  Is that b/c white wine sucks?
