Anyone else dealing with the potty game at bedtime?

For the past couple weeks, DD has been playing this game where 30 minutes after she goes to bed, she comes out of her room and says she has to go potty.  If we don't let her, she flips out and cries.  If we give in, she does pee but runs back to her room afterward and then decides she has to go poop.  Every.single.night.  I let her go back to the potty and she shits for a few minutes but does not poop.

I'm really sick of the ploy to stay up later but I can't deny her going to the bathroom because it sends the wrong message.

So what do you do?

Re: Anyone else dealing with the potty game at bedtime?

  • yes ds always asks to go potty right before bed, sometimes he will pee sometimes he just sits there until we say "done" and take him to bed.. he usually doesnt ask anymore after that.. i dont know how to fix this either because i on the same boat on the wrong message thing...

  • 1.  I can't believe the nest police didn't nab you on shits even though you meant sits!

    2.  We went through this with DD...thankfully the phase was short-lived but she did exactly what your DD is doing.  We started doing a potty routine after brushing teeth before bed.  She sat on the potty with books and I told her that THIS was the time for pee AND poop before bed.  And I explained that bedtime is for resting....poop and pee is done before bed...this is your chance to get it ALL out, etc.

To this day, I make sure my DD pees before bed and sometimes still she'll wake up 20 mins after going to bed and pee again.

    Gl...it's annoying I know!

  • bwahahah I did type shits. How funny.  And how appropriate in that sentence!!

We do that routine already!  She goes potty, we put her jammies and her diaper on and then we go back in and brush her teeth.

I'm more patient of the game than DH is.  I'm constantly reminding him that we can't tell her no.  But she only gets one shot.

  • I know!  Talk about no pun intended!

Even still, what about a "last chance" potty time?  Even if you did it twice, it might actually be even better.  She goes once as part of the routine, then jammies/diaper, brush teeth and then she gets her "last chance" potty time.  Explain it so she knows the deal...this is your last chance before bed, when you're in bed you rest so sit now and try to get it all out before you go in for bed.

IDK...Good luck!  It's annoying because you know it's just a game.  My DS is potty training now and he gets marshmallows if he poops in the potty.  And the poor child is literally going to tear his assopen soon...he strains SO hard and tries to poop every time he's on the toilet just to get the damn marshmallows.  Or he'll go a little bit and flush, etc. and get his marshmallows and then 2 mins later go sit and do some more.  They're smart little things aren't they?

  • DD has been potty trained for almost a year now so it's even more frustrating that this game is just now popping up.
  • That only lasted a few weeks for us
  • DS did that hardcore for about two weeks.  Our problem was he really would pee and poop ever time, he'd pee then back to bed then poop and back to bed and then pee again.  We finally put a potty in his room so that if he has to go during the reading of books he can use the potty in his room but not the big toilet (thereby eliminating the fun of escaping his room and trying to see what else is going on).  If your daughter is in pull ups or underwear you could give her a potty in her room and tell fine go if you have to and get back in bed.

That was my goal but DS refuses to wear pulllups so he's still in cloth at night and he can't do that himself.

  • jsu, she's in CD's at night.  It wouldn't work but it's a great idea if she was in just pull ups.
