Talk To Me About Lupus Anticoagulant

My OB called back with some test results today. He said my lupus anticoagulant ratios were elevated. He said he is sending the results to my RE and didnt get into much more than I will probably be undergoing more testing. Although this could be the answer to my m/c I am scared because I know nothing about it. My cousin was diagnosed with lupus after TTC for 10 years with 7 m/c. Any info or advice would be great. Thanks ladies!

  • Lupus anticoagulant elevations are usually diagnosed in asymptomatic people.  Only a very small portion of those patients actually have lupus. The condition is found more commonly in people with lupus than the general population, thus the name.

It means you have elevated antibodies to portions of your cell membranes.

This is referred to as "anticoagulant" because the antibodies can coat the outside of the cell, the spots where clotting factors usually bind are blocked.

It could explain the m/cs, however as far as I know it can be treated with anticoagulants (anything from Lovenox to baby aspirin).  Best to speak with your RE to find out what can be done to correct it.

  • I've tested positive for this as well. It actually has nothing to do with Lupus. It's a blood clotting disorder & will def. play an impact on m/c. Once I get pregnant again I will have to be on Lovenox, a blood thinner, my entire pregnancy. You will likely have to have at least one more blood test, more specialized to confirm that you have it. It's really not bad & it can be combated. Also, you will likely not ever be able to be on hormonal BC again because of it's risks of blood clots. *big hugs*
  • I have this as well. The two PP explained it well. For added assurance because I was a little freaked....it is not Lupus.
