They said I had a level of 135 which they told me was the limit for needing to do the 3 hour one. I'm really bummed and feeling guilty...I'm remembering every sweet snack I've eaten and every exercise I skipped. Blah.
Any tips for how to prepare for the three hour one are appreciated - taking it on Thursday. Thanks!
Re: failed my 1 hour GD test - tips for 3 hour?
Eating sweets and lack of exercise has nothing to do with a person developing GD. If you have it, you have it.
It is due to hormones created by the placenta. Most women's pancreas can make additional insulin to handle the increased demand created by pregnancy.Others cannot and develope GD.
There is nothing you can do to 'prepare' for the test. Fast the amount of time your doctor told you to. Sit quietly during the 3 hour test. If you have it you want to know so that you can alter your diet and protect your baby.
I will add I am a crunchy-granola organic food type of vegetarian. I had GD during my pregnancy.
Glad to help.
If you fail the 3 hour it is not the end of the world either. You will eat a balanced diet - whole grains, veggies, protein, etc... You will need to add some moderate exercise (ie 10 minutes of walking the hallways) after eating. I was very careful to keep things under control and it paid off. Our baby was born at 7 lbs 7 oz with no blood sugar issues.
And, failing the one hour doesn't mean you will fail the three. Only 15% of women who fail the one hour fail the three hour.
After I failed my one hour, my Dr. gave me a 300 gram a day of carbs diet....You were allowed dessert at lunch and dinner.
It seemed crazy to me, but it worked, I passed the 3 hour. Seems like it has something to do with prepping the pancrease to handle all the sugar from the drink.
I posted this before and cannot find it now.
Good luck, I am sure you will do great and as the PP said, it has nothing to do with what you have been eating.
Take care.....
I don't know if this will be encouraging or discouraging...but you would have passed the test at my Dr.'s office. The cut of there was 140. So, I have reason to suspect you may do well in the 3 hour test anyway.
And like the pp said, even if you fail the 3 hour, you simply start the process by a diet change - one that I have found to be quite refreshing physically - I feel great. I'm making very good food choices and I'm eating nutritiously for my growing baby. (Now, mentally is another issue...I hate all the carb calculating that I've been doing!).
