Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Wait, what's wrong with riding in the cart?

Did I miss something? We just started putting ds in the big part of the shopping cart if he starts to get fussy in the seat. I was just reading the "judging" post and this is something bad? Lol. It's not like I put him in there and walk away...I'm with him the whole time.

  • It's really dangerous.  We pay claims (I work for med insurance) all.the.time for kids that have fallen out and break bones etc.

I, however, will still put Lu in the big part if she start freaking out, but when I do, I am like a crazy person hovering over her.

  • Oh, no is this another judgey nest no-no?
  • I think the idea is that he isn't strapped in and could fling himself over the edge if you were to turn your back for a second so it tends to get the side-eye. I personally don't give it a second thought when I am shopping and see someone do it.

  • This is one of the few things I freak about as a mom. I'm not overprotective in the least bit, but this scares me so much! Please know that I'm not judging or flaming you, but I just have to say why I personally do not do this. Kids do things so fast. My fear is that the child is in the basket, the mom turns to grab laundry soap, and the kid (in that few seconds) has fallen out of the cart onto their head. Thus the reason for the seat and seatbelt.

  • I do see how it could be dangerous. As pp said I do it when j starts getting cranky in the seat- he loves to play with stuff in the cart. I actually literally put my hand on him if I'm getting something off the shelf.
  • I have typed up more accident reports about kids falling out of carts than I care to remember.

Not only that, the thought of putting him in the cart section where food goes kind of skeeves me out. I'm not a germaphobe by any means, but barf. At least I can wipe the handlebar down with a wipe.

  • When DS was younger, I put him in the basket of the cart at Target. I was pushing him along and all of a sudden he grabbed the shelf and flung himself out of the cart. Luckily, I could react fast enough and caught him but it scared the crap out of both of us!!! Now with DD, I make sure she is sitting in the basket or I will let her sit on her knees against the seat part (when pushed back). It still scares me but she doesn't melt down Wink

When Gav gets cranky, I have snacks and toys in the bag for him. I just tell myself (and let him know!) that I'm the parent and I'm in control.

I only said that because she said her kid likes to play with stuff in the back of the cart. Give them something to do in the front and they won't care about being in the back. Sheesh.

  • if you mean the big part of the cart not intended for sitting, then i can see why people are warning you against it. A friend of mine's niece was life flighted and in a coma (age 2) after falling out of a shopping cart a few months ago. She's ok now, but I can't imagine the guilt if she wouldn't have been.

  • My DH has a big scar on his chin from falling out of a shopping cart as a kid and DS got a big fat lip from trying to stand up in the big part of the cart, and falling into the edge. So, I do try to avoid it. I have made the occasional exception when DS was bouncing off the walls and wouldn't sit.

  • I have been tempted when shopping with two and I know DH has done it, but mine would be the kid to fling himself over the edge.  I usually put him in those big car carts and run into everyone since they are so hard to steer.  Either that or he gets the leash.  I get judged no matter what.

I also never remember to bring any snacks or toys in with us and end up opening something in the store.  This is why 99% of my shopping is done on Sunday when I can take one or none.

    lol

Yeah I'm still chuckling at the idea of Lyla sitting happily in her seat, immobile, eating snacks and playing with toys, the entire length of my shopping trip. Because of course I let her know that I'm the parent, therefore in control. Confused

  • DH's younger brother flipped out of a shopping cart when he was a young toddler and fractured his skull. MIL thought it was just a bad fall until a day or so later when he wouldn't stop screaming, and she realized that part of his skull was mushy. (:(

That story gives me the willies, so no, we don't put DD anywhere but buckled in the seat. DH in particular is very careful about it, and I don't blame him!

  • We were in the pet store and DD stood up and fell out of the cart so quickly.  I hadn't even turned away -- was just staring at a fish.  Luckily, I caught her going down.  She was scared but nothing happened.

I always put the little belt on now.  But it would be really hard to get through a whole shopping trip with her walking beside me.  I see kids in the shopping cart all the time, no big deal; personally, I've never gotten a side-eye, as far as I know.

  • lol there are other ideas besides putting them in the cart. the reason its the only thing that fixes it now is because you started it. general you.

  • Jesus, when I'm grocery shopping with Joseph, the last thing in the world that I have time to worry about is where somebody else lets their kids sit.

And when I'm shopping without him? That's pretty much the last thing I am going to waste my precious child-free moments obsessing over.

As long as you aren't beating your kids as I go through the store, or gloatingly gliding past me with your serenely obedient Stepford children, I'm probably not going to give a damn about your kids at all.

  • Just wanted to say I like your DS' name :).  Haven't seen too many other Joey's on here yet!
