Just, curious at what point do you take lo to dr for a cold?

I was just thinking about this last night.  Ds has had a ton of colds and I think the first cold was the only time I took him to the dr.  I see a lot of people on the boards taking lo to dr. for colds.  At what point do you take them in?  I guess ds has never had a bad enough one to warrant.

  • I think I took DS to the doctor's once with a cold, and that's when he had a fever for 2 days straight. That's my metric.

  • Only if they have a persistent fever or I really don't like the sound of the cough. After getting through three cases of croup, I feel qualified to diagnose it just by listening to them.
  • The only colds I ever took DS in for was when he had RSV (he was wheezing) and when he had a persistant fever (he had an ear infection).

He's in daycare, so he's had about a zillion colds.

  • I've never taken D in for just a cold (runny nose, cough, sneezing).  If there is a temp I would probably call the doc for advice and see if they want to see him.  Or, in the case of what we had going on yesterday, when we had crazy green eye goop we called and they said to take him to urgent care (he has an eye infection and an ear infection).

But with simple cold symptoms, there isn't anything the doc can do, so I wouldn't take D in.

  • The only time I have ever taken him in for a cold was after he was sick for 5 days...ok for 1 week, then sick again.  I wanted to make sure he didnt have an ear infection since it didnt clear up and he has never had one before
  • the only times that i've taken shane in was after days and days of throwing up and when he had swine flu.  for us to go to the doctor, it would have to be a really high fever that's not going down with tylenol/motrin and/or severe congestion (to where i'm concerned about breathing at night).

  • i wouldn't take dd unless she had a fever that won't go down or was very lethargic.

luckily dd has never been all that sick (knock on wood) aside from the occasional runny nose.

  • If it's strictly limited to a runny nose, light cough-I'll call, but only bring in if they ask me to.

Add a fever, ear pulling and additional miserableness and they almost always ask to see her.

  • She had an ear infection once where she blew out her eardrum so I take her at any sign of an ear infection/super clogged.  I'll also take her if she has a cough lasting more than a couple of days.

  • I haven't.  I called when he got his first fever but that's it.  Luckily he hasn't ever gotten really sick and I know there's nothing they can do about a cough and runny nose so unless it gets worse than that I don't even think about it.
