I was wondering the same thing about a full. We just got DS his big boy set (although I'll keep him in his crib as long as possible) and was wondering the going rate on a decent full mattress.
Twins are a good way to go because sheets/etc. are always the least expensive. I know a lot of furniture stores have mattress sales this time of year. To give you some sort of reference, when we were looking at mid-range full mattresses it seemed like $400/500 was standard but we only looked two places. Twin are definitely less expensive.
DD is still in her toddler bed but within the next couple weeks she'll be getting a twin size bed from Ikea. I think the mattress is around $50 and the bed is $200

If we don't use my old one, we'll probably scour CL & yard sales when the time comes. I'd like to keep it under $50 for the bed, then get a new mattress set.
BTW - the twin bed I had growing up my parents bought at a yardsale for $10. And I swear it is the most sturdy frame I've ever seen.
Since I know a lot of us like Ikea I just wanted to give you some info... DH and I bought our bedroom set from Ikea - Hemnes style (bed, tall dresser, wide dresser, nightstand). We haven't been very happy with the quality as drawer bottoms have fallen out and the front of two of the drawers have fallen off. And it's not like we're crazy animals yanking our drawers out or anything.
I think if you're getting a toddler bed from Ikea you will have no worries as longevity isn't the concern and their stuff is super cute. If you're looking for something that is sturdy and is going to stand the test of time, I'd look into other options.
Edit: I don't know the scoop on the mattresses, just talking about the actual furniture.
The head board, foot board, and guard rail were a hand me down from when I was a kid. We bought a mattress only at Sam's Club for $199. We put a piece of ply wood under the mattress instead of a box spring so we can keep him close to the ground.
No Ikea around here, obviously. *sigh* We looked at AFW and Guys & Dolls (crazy expensive!), and the PBK bed (which has been on sale for awhile) was actually quite reasonable comparatively, which I was surprised by. I had no idea that twin beds could be so expensive, if you want more than a metal frame and/or a headboard.
We kept an eye out on CL for quite awhile, but nothing was coming along that didn't look battered to death or a style that we didn't like. This one will last as long as we need it.
We also bought the Catalina bed from PBK. On sale it is a fantastic price and I went to the store to look at it and it is very sturdy. So, I think it will grow well with him.
Re: If you are going to or have bought a Twin bed for your toddler- come in.
I got a toddler bed on CL ($40 for a dora one, plus sheets and pillowcase)- I didn't want her too far from the ground.
