Ok, what is your trick for giving your LO medicine when you don't have someone else to hold them down? Seriously. D hates (with a passion!) getting medicine, and it takes me about 5 minutes to get the one dropper in him. I have him sitting on my lap, face forward, and I hold his arms down with one arm, but it still takes forever because he moves his head like crazy and the dropper is a PITA. Any tips/advice?
Oh - the medicine is an amoxicillian + something else I can't remember combo.
Re: Giving medicine alone
Mitchell loves medicine, so we don't have this problem
Try sitting on the floor and lay him down in front of you. Put your legs over his arms so he can't flail around and see if he'll take the medicine that way. It sounds horrible, but it's not! That's what I've had to do to get Mitchell to brush his teeth sometimes...
Ok, this is going to sound mean but I swear you wont be hurting your son. If you can sit on the floor with your legs out in front of you (open a bit). Put ds facing you with his legs over yours and your lap...then put your legs on top of his arms and kind of holding his head inbetween them. That way his legs are too far away to kick, and his arms are pinned...you can also kinda use your legs to hold his head in place too. Since he is laying on his back he will also have a harder time spitting out the meds. You can also squeeze his cheeks after you put the meds in so it kinda looks like fishy lips...he will swallow it then.
Not sure if I am explaning this well enough, but it does work.
The first time I tried to give DS the amoxicillin, he didn't like it, but then started liking it the next couple of tries. Did you get it flavored? I got the bubble gum flavor for DS when he had it. Other than just trying to give it to him in spurts, then I'd try in a little bit of juice (just make sure it's not too much b/c then he won't get all the medicine).
Good luck!
I'm not sure about the flavor, DH went and got it. It smells good - almost like Pina Coloda (yum!) and I was tempted to taste it to see if it was as bad as D was making it out to be. Then I remembered I'm allergic to amoxicillin...
I put DS in the high chair and recline it. I give him something to hold and go for it! Do you get your meds flavored? DS loves the grape and doesn't give us to much fuss as long as it's grape.
