Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Today... it happened... (and a poll)

I put Rylee down for a nap.  About 35 minutes later... I hear a knock at her door.  Yup.  You guessed it.

I opened the door and she walked out and shut the door.

Great.  lol :)

So... now the real question... Do we...

1. Try the crib again tonight?

2. Suck it up and take the side off?

  • 1. Try the crib again

    2. If it happens again then take the side off to deter an accident

  • Take the side off. I wasn't thrilled about it when DS started climbing out at 22 months, but leaving it up is a broken arm just waiting to happen.
  • Why was she moved out of a crib in the first place?
  • That happened here today too!!!! Completely freaked me out - I was in the shower and DS sauntered in.  I want to hear the responses because I don't know what to do.

    She climbed out...

  • That happened to us last week. I put him in to run up into the attic real quick and on my way down the steps he was standing at the bottom of them as happy as could be. I wasn't sure to wait it out or just switch to bed. Luckily so far he hasnt' done it again.

Ah, got it. Then in that case, I wouldn't try the crib again! I am so glad my crib sides are high enough that DD can't climb out, because I die if I had to move her to a bed already!

I got it now. I misunderstood and thought you meant that she was already in a toddler bed and just got up & knocked on the door to come out. I now understand that your question is about whether to convert to a toddler bed, which I guess you should do if the alternative is that she climbs out of her crib.

  • K climbed out twice before I decided to take off the front off. I was scared to wait and chance her falling out

  • We switched to a twin bed a few weeks ago and it really went very well. It is a little freaky when he wanders into our room in the am, but kinda nice too.
  • I fear the day DS learns how to climb out of his crib.

And he's so tall that I know he could do it if he only thought about it.

  • I don't have any tips but I am noting that I have about 7 more months before this happens at my house!

DS is too.  I flipped it around so the high part was in the front. That bought me several more months...until today!

  • If she's done it once, she'll do it again. And you don't want her half asleep tumbling out. I would either take the side off or maybe look into a crib tent if that would work for her. We just went right to a bed.

oooooo, good idea (assuming DS tries to climb over the front)....i'll have to remember this...
  • Sorry but that is so funny!  She knocked?  lol

I would try crib again or think about a tent if you can't trust her in toddler bed to sleep and not get into things.

I second this. DS did it once a month or so ago and hasn't done it since. I think the reason he was able to get up high enough to climb out was because he had so many stuffed animals in there. One Elmo was especially sturdy for him to stand on, which is what I caught him doing one day. So our solution was to take some of those things out and see if it happened again. It hasn't, thank goodness, so we haven't switched to the toddler bed yet. He is just not ready for that.

  • I'm not looking forward to that day.  I don't have any advice but just want to know what others think.

  • I use to leave the side down of the crib so DD could climb out, before we finally moved her to the toddler bed.

What about a crib tent? Unless you think she's ready ..

  • If you don't think she's ready, I'd second a crib tent.

Or...depending on your crib style, can you remove the frame holding the mattress and put the mattress directly on the floor inside the crib? I know ours would work that way...the crib sides go far enough down on the sides that there wouldn't be any space.

I haven't done that...but read about someone else who did and it worked.
