Statistics on giving birth at 36 weeks?

So two of my friends gave birth yesterday- both had baby girls!  But one of them was 36 weeks.  That makes five friends that have had babies 35-36 weeks along.  I was wondering if anyone has info on what the chances of that happening are?  DH is going to England for his brother's wedding when I am 36 weeks and I am terrified.  He is going to leave that Thursday and come back Monday but still- I am so afraid.  I think I would feel better and when I try to find something all I come up with is premie stats.  I really just want to know statistically speaking what are the chances of going into labor then?

Re: Statistics on giving birth at 36 weeks?

  • It's very common for a first time mom to go past her EDD, not early (especially NOT 36 weeks.)

Did your friends have any complications that would cause them to deliver early?

If you've had a healthy pregnancy thus far, your chances are very slim.

  • 40 weeks is just the average for pregnancies...which is why it is perfectly normal to go to 42 weeks or have the baby at 38...36 is early which is why you keep coming up with preemie stats. That seems strange that so many of your friends have had their babies then! Try not to worry...I think most first babies come late! Mine had to be induced at 42 weeks..I'm hoping this one comes a little earlier than that :)
  • Nope- and all of these women it was their first pregnancies- so you can sorta understand why I am thinking of chaining him to a chair.  I know most women go over- my best friend had to be enduced at 41w4days and one other friend went in naturally at 41w exactly.

  • My first was born at 37 weeks and my second was born at 36 weeks.  No complications at all.  Most people I know, though, have their babies 38+ weeks.

  • 38-42 is "normal" as 95% of births occur during this time period.  If you took Intro statistics it is a bell curve centered at 40.

At 36 the babies are likely to be fine.  Think of it this way, when a mother is having mulitples they quite frequently do a c-section at 35 weeks to get them out and so one baby at 36 weeks can't be bad :-)  A friend of mine had her son at 34 or 35 weeks.  He was in NICU for 1-2 weeks but then he came home and is A-okay.

  • I had been told at prenatal class that most first time mom's deliver after 40 weeks.  That being said, one of the girls in my class had to leave early because she delivered at 34 weeks.  Her water broke and she went into labour.

Last week on Oprah a woman delivered at 26 weeks.   But you can't worry to much about those situations.  If you DH is out of town for 4 days,  you have to decide if both of you are okay with the possibility that you go into labour.  I statistically it isn't likely.  But I would ask your Dr.  he/she will be able to check you for any signs of labour before your husband leaves.  It's not a guarantee, but it might help you both sleep better.

  • I don't know anyone who delivered earlier than 39 weeks.
  • I had DS at 36 weeks exactly due to pPROM (preterm premature rupture of membranes). I had a normal pregnancy. I will likely go early again.

  • I was born at 36 weeks- a little small at 6lbs 5 oz. Had to spend some time at the hospital (1 week for jaundice), but other than that I've been fine.
