2nd Trimester

Do you force yourself to eat...

even if you aren't hungry?

I was ravenous a couple weeks ago, but this past week I haven't been hungry at all. Not even 'normal' hungry. I realized last night that I went to bed without dinner and made myself get out of bed for cheese and grapes. I worry sometimes that I'm not getting enough nutrients even though his growth is on target so far. It seems counter intuitive to force my body to consume food if I don't want it, but at the same time it's not healthy to skip meals under normal circumstances let alone when pg.

  • Nope, never. Stick out tongue I'm always up for eating.

  • I don't see any reason to force yourself to eat unless your doctor has discussed with you a need to gain weight.

  • Unless baby isn't growing on track then I wouldn't worry. I eat when I'm hungry and don't when I'm not. Your body knows what you need.
  • In the evenings I do.  I'm usually not hungry once dinner time rolls around and I feel "full" even though I know I need to eat dinner.  When I feel this way I make myself eat a small dinner and then make myself have a snack later.  Plus, I know that if I don't eat enough for dinner and then a snack I will wake up famished in the middle of the night, which sucks.
  • Yup you still do need to eat something, not only for the nutrients, but for the kcals.  There's days where I have very little appetite, but I always eat something.  I don't need my body to slow it's metabolism down and it's still important to get in the nutrients and kcals.

  • I have slim fast shakes when I'm not hungry but need to get food in my body. They are loaded with vitamins and minerals.

  • I don't "force" myself, because to me that implies that I'm having to choke the food down. But yes, I do eat when I am not hungry. Like, right now I am eating some grape nuts. I already had some yogurt earlier this morning. Before I was pregnant I almost never ate breakfast. I do it because I figure the baby could use the nutrients.
  • I try to at least have a smoothie but I've been losing weight because I've had no appetite so my dr said I have to make myself eat.
  • Sometimes I do just because I know if I don't, I will start to feel sick. It's been hard for me, because my body was so used to not eating until I was hungry, but now I have to eat waaaay before then otherwise, I'll feel awful.
  • our bodies go through phases... i would not eat if I wasn't hungry- because when I am hungry I really need to eat.

Also,  its the same with weight gain, sometime you gain a bunch and then not so much for a while.   just make sure to keep getting lots of fluids and your prenatal vitamins.

Yes Wish I had your problem ...

  • I eat when I am not hungry.  Usually a glass of milk or some cereal or an orange or some cheese and crackers, especially for dinner.  If it is just a snack, I will skip it but if it is breakfast or dinner, I just suck it up and eat.

  • I do. I haven't really been hungry this entire pregnancy. I have to make myself eat and when I do I get full really fast. I hope to get my apatite back soon, because I really enjoy eating.

  • I don't need to force myself to eat at this point, but when I was in my 24/7 m/s time period I did force myself to eat even though I know it would make me feel more sick.  I just kept telling myself it wasn't about me at that point.  Sounds like that's what you are doing, too.

  • I have to. It's the only way to keep my "morning/all day sickness" down. If I don't eat for about 2-4 hours (depending on the day) then I get physically ill and will end up dry heaving (gross, I know). So, I eat a little something even if I'm not hungry or have no desire to eat.

  • Its not good for you to only eat when you "feel hungry". You should be eating regular small meals. Especially with being pregnant, you need extra calories.

  • Yes I defiantly force my self to eat, I have a hard time keeping things down and every time I get physically sick I have no appetite after. But I make myself eat something, until I find the winner that will actually stay down.
  • Eating regularly will also help to keep your hormones and blood sugar under a bit of control.

  • Nope. I tend to just follow my appetite, pregnant or not. Although during the first tri I would eat a few crackers to stave off m/s. But otherwise, I eat when the urge strikes.
