My DH and I are hoping to concieve around July of this year. With that being said, how soon before that should we start trying? My cycle is regular and I have been off BC for almost a year. I dont want to count on getting pregnant the first month we try, but I also am hoping for July/August as I am a teacher and am hoping to time it so my maternity leave works into my summer break next year. When did you all start trying, and how long on average does conception take?? I know...im a newbie, so be gentle on my question please!
Re: When should we start trying?
It can take the average healthy couple up to a year. We have been trying for 6 months, no luck yet.
I would start trying now. There's no way you can plan to get pregnant exactly when you want. Good luck!
ETA: I would really recommend charting to get to know if/when you ovulate. It can help you time sex appropriately. You can get to Fertility Friend by clicking on any of our chart tickers.

1)Hoping to conceive a certain month is like hoping to learn how to fly this year. Its a nice idea- its just probably not going to happen.
2)I would suggest charting with fertilityfriend.com to learn your cycles so that you can better predict your ovulation time.
3)Read Taking Charge of your Fertilty to learn about your body, etc. Its a great rescourse
Welocome and good luck.

I ideally wanted to conceive a particular month ... then I threw that idea out the window when I realized how ridiculous that was. It may happen for you ... it may not. Luckily, I am blessed with a boss who understands the importance of family and said that it doesn't matter when we have a baby ... that will be most important.
Now we are due at the most inopportune time ... but we're thrilled!
A word of advice - and I don't mean this snarky at all - it's just reality. Take your "I want a ___ month baby" and throw it out the window. You cannot plan when you get pregnant. You can try your best, but more often than not, it's not gonna happen.
It can take up to a year for a healthy couple to get pregnant. And you only have a 20% shot each month.
That being said, good luck!
this.
I am a teacher too, and I am VERY lucky that that the timing worked out that I am due on the last day of school.
However, it wasn't a priority and it took us a about 4 months to get PG. I also hadn't been on BCP for a couple years (we used condoms), so i have no idea how long it would have taken if I had just gone BCP.

I'm a teacher too and we started trying 9 months ago thinking it would be great to take maternity leave through the end of the school year. That didn't work out as planned and we've decided our family is more important than work and anytime we can concieve would be wonderful. We are now hoping for a November baby!
Some couples get pregnant the first cycle trying or even on accident, other couples it takes much longer... GL!
This all the way!! I wanteda summer baby almost 3 years ago when I first started trying!! Still no baby! GL!!
This. There is no way to be absolutely sure that you will conceive exactly when you want to (unfortunately!) I would start trying now. GL to you!
If only it were that easy....
Good Luck though!

I hope it works out for you, but for most of us, it hasn't. Knowing what I know now, I wish we would have started a year ago. My charts looked great, regular cycles, was ovulating, etc. and we're still having trouble...
Good luck to you!
TTC #1 Since July 2009 slightly low progesterone, endo, kinked right tube, Clomid, Lap and Hysteroscopy, and 13 months TTC = BFP! (7/23/10) Cautiously Expecting... 8/19/10 - it's TWINS!... 11/8/10 - Boy/Girl twins! Born 37w4d
This. Definitely chart. You can start charting before your "pre-conception" check up (which isn't needed BTW, unless you have known medical issues). GL.

after anovulatory diagnosis and TTC for 1 1/2yrs with several medicated cycles and one chemical pregnancy, we have our first bundle of joy!

#2 EDD 2/5/13 dx with anti-BIG E antibody, seeing a MFM
I don't take one single minute for granted.
Going for a pre-TTC check up is fine but they won't tell you much. They won't do fertility testing unless you've tried for at least a year with no luck. For this appt, you'll go over what kind of Prenatal vitamins to take and that's about it.
