So 2x today and several times over the past week, DS has become hysterical when we try to nurse. Its to the point where he will not latch on and is often inconsolable. Sometimes its after we do a diaper change...sometimes its when we try to switch breasts...sometimes its seemingly for no reason. I asked the lacation consultant earlier this week and she indicated it was normal.
DS is kind of on a feeding schedule due to his weight loss after he left the hospital (not strict and if he is showing signs of hunger...of course we feed him...he (we) just need to have something in place because he is usually such a laid back baby and won't let us know if he is hungry). He's gaining now (thank goodness!)
Also, he has started going for just 20 minutes each feeding where he was going 30-40 minutes (maybe bc my milk has come in and he doesn't need to nurse as long?).
Did any of you go through this? We have our first peds appt tomorrow so we will go over this with him as well. TIA!
Re: BF question
I never went thru that but the 20 min thing - try taking him off, and burping him and hten reoffering the breast. He may just have some gas.
as far as him being inconsolable, could it be that he's really hungry? you said he's on a schedule but it may be waiting a tad too long. Look for hunger cues early - rooting, and a "neh neh" cry. When A. was young, she ate every 3 hours except for 5-9 pm when she ate every 30 minutes.
