Re: What is a wishing well?

  • For my wedding shower I had a wishing well, and its where people bring little inexpensive things to wish you well. lol Besides their gift they brought me like detergent, toilet paper, little things for the kitchen, etc.. If you go to like a party city they will have the actual wishing well, where people put the gifts in... You rent it out for the day. Hope this helps. I'm assuming that for a baby shower its baby related items.

  •  Wishing wells are right up there with dollar dances for me...but I know it is a regional thing.  I haven't ever been to a shower with one and can't say that I feel I have missed out on the opportunity to throw in a random pacifier or wipes container.  I am sure any store that sales paper party plates would have one or oriental tradings...they have everything.

  • Ok, thanks. I kept reading post where this is mentioned but I had never of it. The comparison to the dollar dance is a good one. I have never liked that - always made me think that the bride was being treated like a stripper but that is just my opinion.

  • I've always thought that it was something that people put actual money in.  MCC, thanks for asking so now I know too!

  • At least in my family, we never do the dollar dance, never do bridal shower wishing wells, but for some reason always do baby shower wishing wells. For us, the extras brought for it are little things like wipes, diapers, maybe a small toy, pacifier, booties, maybe a book - just a little extra thing. And again, at least in my family, they are always assumed so it's not on the invite or anything but people always bring that something extra because they just know.

  • a wishing well is usually when you ask for cash and checks only. While I've heard of it for bridal showers, I have not been to a baby shower with one.  The closest is one friend asked for gift cards and pampers only because she had a shower for baby #3 and had plenty of hand me downs.

  • Oriana...just wanted to say:  your wedding gown is gorgeous and so is your bouquet!  My DH wouldn't be caught dead in a pink bout though.  lol

I have never head of a wishing well until I read it on here.  I live in Michigan and have been to probably 30 showers in my life and there has never been one.  I'm thinking they are regional or cultural.

Just one comment about the dollar dances at weddings.  I am Polish and it is definitely a Polish tradition.  Even if the bride has no plans to have one...if there are Polish people there...there WILL be one because the guests start their own.  It is not "tacky" if it is a cultural thing.  Could be that is the way of the wishing well.

  • A wishing well. Its look just like a wishing well....it sometime comes in a package deal. For example the Chair rental is 35 and the deposit it 50 but if you want a wishing well and an umbrella its 70 for the rental and 70 for the deposit. Every has to get returned (ie. the chair, the wishing well, and the umbrella)

Alot of Spanish people cultures do this but its not originated from our spanish countries. What I mean is this. I am Costa Rican my husband is Puerto Rican. I've never in m country been to a baby shower with a wishing well or a big fancy chair to sit in....that all came about here in America. Its an American tradition.

None the less. Its not big enough to put your gifts in though they will tell you, you can. But no way you can fit a stroller box in there. Its actually purpose is to put all the envelopes with money. Fill that up!!! It will pay for your baby shower...I cant tell you that much!

I was about to say I am hispanic (Nicaraguan) and I have never been to a hispanic shower where that has been used. I have never been to an american shower where they have used it either to be honset. Maybe it is a regional thing? I prefer for people to give something they want to give you (except plane utensils from the 70's!).

  • I've never heard of a wishing well where you put money into it.  I've only heard of the gift wishing well, where the host is asking the guest to bring an additional gift.  For baby showers, the guests would bring small baby items.  For a bridal shower, I've only heard of the ones where you bring household items that the guests attributes meaning to...a wooden spoon to spank your sweetie with.

I, personally, am not fond of them or fond of being asked to bring addtional gifts.
