Pregnant after 35

Amnio at 16 weeks

I am having an amnio at 16 weeks.  My doctor did not say anything about having a full bladder, and neither did the scheduler when I made the appointment.  From what I've read, the doctor uses ultrasound to guide the needle.  I am going to call my doctor and ask, but just wondered if anyone else could tell me how this went??  Thanks.

Re: Amnio at 16 weeks

  • I had an amnio with both of my PG. It is a very simple procedure. THey will do an U/S to checck on the baby and find a spot away from the baby where there is a good amount of fluid and mark a spot on your belly. THey will rub your belly with antiseptic of some kind and one dr gave me some kind of numbing cream the other Dr did not. And then while they have the U/S on to keep track of everything the dr will insert the needle into your stomach. It stings a little but not terrible (and I HATE needles). You may have a little cramping. For both of my amnio's I was scheduled for a thurs and took thurs/fri off of work. They rec that you stay off your feet for 24-48hours but by doing it on a thurs I had the weekend as well to jsut relax.

If you are doing this as a result of bad test results, ask them to do a FISH test that will give you preliminary results of Chromosone counts and gender. Then the full results come back in 10-14 days.

    Good luck!!!

  • It'll be fine. I had mine at 17w and they went in around my belly button.Doc looked for a good spot with the ultrasound, then the whole test was over in less than a minute. Mine did not hurt at all. I went to the mall and walked around (ok'd by doc before I did it), and was absolutely fine. I got the results in about 10 days, and am so glad I did the test.

    Good luck.

  • I had an amnio at 18 weeks.  It was a very simple procedure.  It didn't hurt at all -- it felt like a flu shot in my belly.  My doc did not use a numbing solution -- just go for the amnio shot.  I had the numbing solution with my CVS, and that hurt.  The rest of the procedure is like what other posters said. I put my feet up the rest of the day.  I didn't have any cramping or other complications.  I went to work the next day.
  • Mine was painless and I did not need a full bladder
  • I dont recall having to have a full bladder;  they did an initial u/s to see where the placenta was and we also got to see that our LO was all boy (and only too happy to show everyone else!).  Then they ended the u/s and inserted the needle.

  • I had my amnio and a full bladder wasn't needed. Good Luck, don't worry it's virtually painless.
