Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

My aunt still feeds her 2yo puree

No eating challenges or anything that could contribute to a reason to continue purees. She just would rather feed her puree since she "knows she'll eat it" instead of trying anything that's at the dinner table.

She also gives her very very small bites. For example, the banana was cut into 10 slices, those slices were cut in half. Yup.

Oh, she also has 10 teeth. (my cousin, not my aunt, lol)

Yeah. My 3.5 y/o cousin still eats it sometimes when they're "out and about"

She gives her some table foods. But she eats a lot of yogurts, purees, applesauce, etc. She'll also get shredded cheeses and things like that.

My aunt flipped when I handed DS a half a banana and when she saw he had eaten the whole banana.

  • Sounds like mom doesn't want her baby to grow up..

My pedi asked me why I haven't tried getting DS off the bottle yet and I said because I don't want my baby to grow up. ;)

  • That's ridiculous.  She might not want her "baby" to grow up but she's doing her a huge disservice.  Our jaws need to be exercised to grow and develop muscle tone properly, that little girl isn't going to have an opportunity to do this unless she is given the proper food.  Can you pull up some research for her or would she flip out at you?

  • But yogurts, applesauce, etc. are still pretty much a normal part of a 2yo diet, no? Is jarred baby food still a part of the diet too? Also, regarding the "small bites," my DS is 13 months and pretty much all of his friends take bites. DS does not, he crams everything he is holding into his mouth. Yes, we are practicing with bites but I still think that when he is 15 years old I'll probably be cutting his food up small - I worry about choking.

She'd flip out. She's the one who tried lecturing me on having DS RF after a year. (she was against it). She also talks about me behind my back so I don't really think she'd "appreciate" me giving her any advice.

Ew that sucks!  Hopefully her pedi and dentist can give her some advice and she'll believe them.  How does she not realize that every other toddler is eating solid table food by now?

I wonder that too. When we were there for dinner. I tossed some things on DS's plate and let him go to town. She had her DD on her lap and spoon fed her. I know her DD can feed herself with a spoon, I've seen her do it with yogurt.

    It's so confusing.

  • That's really odd.... It makes me worry that it could cause the child to develop texture problems in the future when starting to eat real foods since she's only used to purees.
