Keeping Valentine's Day EF. How Do You Do It?

DH & I got each other local made choclates.

DH got my flowers from a local mom & pop hot house (unofficially EF, they have the theory that if it grows, then it grows, and if it doesn't, well, then it doesn't)

We got Xavian houses for his train set at a train show.  They're a good 15 years old, and 2nd hand.  He's thrilled!

Korra got a Little Mermaid costume from the Disney store, off the clearance rack.  Like $10.  She's elated!

Saxton got a wooden train set made made in Bradford, PA.

I also got DH some flower and green peas seeds.

Re: Keeping Valentine's Day EF. How Do You Do It?

  • We don't give each other gifts.
We have officially sworn off buying cards for anyone besides grandmas who like a handwritten card.

I am, however, bakin' up some cinnamon rolls and might make heart-shaped "sausage" tarts for dinner. DH likes little holiday things because his mom never did anything like that.

  • We make our own cards.

As far as flowers go, DH only gives potted plants/flowers.  I'm generally anti-things dying in my house.

I am the same way!  I hate getting flowers.  Plus, they are sprayed with crap to make them last longer, which is sooooo not EF

If we must give someone else a flower, its potted, even if we get weird looks lol

No candy giving in our house, please!

  • No gifts here, either.  We usually don't celebrate much, but now that DS is here I want to start doing small, fun family things with/for him.  He's too young to understand yet, but next year we'll do more.  I'm making DH a nice dinner.  And Mom got DS a stuffed "Be Mine" frog.  I would have objected, but she really did mean well, saying, "LOOK!  It's made from 100% post consumer materials."  She's making a much bigger effort to respect my EF requests than I ever thought she would.  If only I could get MIL on board.

  • ET made cards with an outline of his hand and his own crayon additions.  we mailed them out to the grandparents this week.
  • Uhhh, we just don't do anything Hmm

Actually, I take that back. We went to breakfast at La Grande Orange after church and instead of taking the disposable flatware, I took regular flatware.  Then, I recycled the disposable cup that I had.  Does that count?

Also, later I may give DH a card that I bought last year to give him but didn't because he didn't get me anything.  He didn't get me anything this year either but it's a really pretty card and I'm tired of storing it in my nightstand.

    Yeah, that's about it.

  • We just don't do anything. My DH closes his store tonight, so I barely saw him today; DD and I went to a birthday party/brunch this morning.
  • I don't think we did this year really. We went out to a very un-EF meal last night (Bertucci's because the local Mexican place we wanted had an hour long wait before 6pm!) and then today we made box mix cupcakes with canned frosting and DS got a book and a card. DH got me tulips from the florist up the road and I got him a card....
  • We don't do anything.  We eat a nice homemade dinner, and my mom gave me a reusable sandwich bag filled with homemade beef jerky (lol).  I made some fortune cookies for DH (they may or may not be naughty ;) )

That's it.  No flowers, no gifts for the kids, just a valentine's hug and kiss :)  And they don't celebrate V-day at their school either, thank goodness!

  • We don't do anything either.  No cards, no candy.  DD did color a paper heart for daddy and Nana tonight and gave it to them, but that's it.  We don't really get into Valentine's day too much and it's fine by me.

  • No gifts... just a nice little dinner I made and DH cleaned up after.
