Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

So, do dogs

generally enjoy eating diapers?

Because the dog of the kids that I watch apparently does. He figured out how to get the door underneath the sink open, and he has been knocking the garbage out and eating Liliana's dirty diapers.

I'm getting nauseous just thinking about it! I was emailed and asked to throw the diapers out elsewhere, which is fine. But geeze. I feel embarrassed and really grossed out about that.

Re: So, do dogs

  • Pepper does.  He doesn't go near the cloth, but in the rare situation he's in a disposable, we need to look out.  He'll even tear apart the clean disposables!

Diapers are risky things for dogs, though.  The beads can expand inside their stomachs, which can be deadly.  This per my vet when I was pregnant.

  • Yes, both my dogs like raiding the diaper pail. It's a treat for them. We have to keep DD bedroom door shut now.
  • Gross. I so did not know this. I wish that I would have known that it was dangerous for them - I would have been throwing the diapers out elsewhere to begin with.

    Yuck yuck yuck.

Don't worry!  How would you know?  And most of the time, they are just fine!  They have to eat a lot of those gel things.  Also, I would have thrown them away in the kitchen, too.  How would you know the dog would knock over the garbage to get the dipes?  You're all good :)

This is correct.  The gel beads are mainly made of cellulose so toxicity generally isnt an issue but the beads expanding in the stomach/intestine can be very dangerous.

And used tampons. I have a really gross, embarrassing story of something that happened to a friend of mine, but I won't share it here.
