Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Chicago ladies

We are taking a weekend trip up there in April.  We are staying downtown about 1.5 miles from Shedds.  We are only going to have 2 days to do stuff and one of those days we are going to Shedds.   What should we do for the other day?  I need something that would be fun for both my 21 month old and 10 y/o.  Is the Legoland place neat?  I was also thinking of the Natural History museum.  TIA!

Re: Chicago ladies

  • I'd recommend the children's museum on Navy Pier. The Field (Natural history) museum might be a little boring for a 21 month old since there's not a lot of stuff he'd be able to touch. But there's tons of interactive stuff at the Children's Museum, and there's a pretty good mix of stuff for older and younger kids. Navy Pier itself is also kind of fun - it's very tourist-y with lots of vendors selling Chicago t-shirts and stuff like that. You could easily make a day out of it and get lunch there and then go to the museum.

  • There is a Children's Museum at Navy Pier, though I've never been there (to the museum part, but the rest of Navy Pier is pretty fun).  I'm not sure where Legoland is....

I think the Field Museum could be fun for both.  You should definitely check out Millennium Park, I think both of your kids will like "the bean" and the Crown fountain (though...not sure if the crown fountain will be on in April...).

ETA:  Hmmm...the Millennium park website says the fountain is on mid-spring to mid-fall--guess it will depend on how late in April you are going and how nice the weather is.

  • If you do choose to go to the Field Museum there is a section called the Crown Family Playlab that your little one will just love.  However, I'm not sure what your 10 year old is into, but I'd think he'd be a little bored there overall.

He'd probably have a much better time (and the 21 month old would also enjoy it) at the MSI.  So much more interactive and fun!  It's a bit farther down LSD from the museum campus.

Legoland is out in Schaumburg at the Streets of Woodfield...will you have a car? I haven't been, but friends have taken their kids and really liked it.  I've heard it's pretty cool.  There would be tons of places to eat out there too.

  • Ditto the PP's, but also if you have time, check out Science and Industry...they will have a ton of stuff your kids will like, too!  Very interactive!
