Babies: 3 - 6 Months

cereal & food at 3.5-4 months?

My friend keeps asking me if I have given my DD food.  I plan on waiting a while...

And I'm totally not judging - but isn't 3.5 months a little early?  She was going to start cereal at 3 months... do pedis generally tell people to go ahead with food at 3 months?  She says she does veggies and cereal.

Re: cereal & food at 3.5-4 months?

  • My pedi said if reflux was still an issue, we could start with cereal in the bottle. However, he didn't suggest starting actual feedings until about 4.5-5 months. And that was just rice.

He suggested starting veggies about 5.5 months, and adding more from about 6 months.

  • I talked to my pedi about this yesterday at DD's 4 month appt. I want to wait as long as possible before introducing solids & he said anything up to 12 months is fine but the APA recommends only bm or formula for at least 6 months. Most pedi's say cereal at 4 months at the earliest.

  • Pedi's generally advise food starting at 4 months at the earliest...some even suggest 6 months as the starting point.

  • I will add though, we started cereal just a few days ago, and I didn't think LO was ready either.  But, she was showing lots of interest in our food.

  • we put rice cereal in bottle to help with sleep at 3.5 months.  at our 4month appt this week, pedi said to go ahead and start rice cereal on a spoon and then move onto veggies.  we are starting a little on the early side cause ds's weight gain hasn't been stellar - he is eating an appropriate amount of breastmilk daily, but keeps dropping percentiles for weight, so she just wanted to get more food into him...
