rare tuna...?

Haven't had my first appt, DH and I are going to dinner and there's an Ahi tuna appetizer I wanted to try, but obviously it's cooked rare in the middle.  I have read you're not supposed to have sushi...which is kind of the same thing.  What have your doctors told you?  On that note, what about say, a med rare steak?

  • when it comes to undercooked meat, I like to err on the side of caution.

  • It's not "kind of" the same thing.. it is the same thing.  The issue with sushi is that you are not supposed to eat raw meat/fish.  Ahi tuna is not okay unfortunately.

I would not go with medium rare... medium should be fine.

  • The center of that tuna steak might as well be sushi.  Raw fish is definitely on the "don't" list.  Sorry!

  • meh, I had sushi a few weeks ago, knowing full well I was pg and the risks it entailed - I figured, what the hell do women in Japan eat while pregnant, right? Also, all fish in the US is flash frozen (even if it's served as sushi later), to kill parasites, etc. (Though the article does say that tuna is the one fish that's generally the exception). I dunno, I wouldn't be that worried about it, but that's just me.

As for meat, undercooked chicken is a lot scarier than undercooked beef - people do eat steak tartare. I'm sure medium rare would be fine, but go with what you're comfortable with.

  • Ahi tuna is seared, so it's raw on the inside. I wouldn't get it but not because it's raw but because it's tuna and I avoid it while pregnant because of murcury.

Sushi is something I won't give up- the risks are the same for a pregnant woman as they are for a not pregnant woman. You can get food poisoning but there is nothing "special" in raw fish that poses any more serious risks to your baby, like Listeria in deli meat (not that I'm saying you have to give that up either, but comparatively speaking, it's technically more dangerous during pregnancy than sushi).

  • Also, don't order the tuna medium or anything more than that, it'll be gross. It's meant to be eaten seared, it gets ruined if you cook it further and won't be worth it anyway.
  • Lots of different opinions for sure but I had seared tuna a few times with DD.

Raw tuna is a no no because of risk of parasites (among other things) but I ate it at a place I had had it at a million times before so I felt safe eating it.  It is really all about how safe you feel "risking" it.  To each their own.

  • Tuna steaks are supposedly not good for pregnant women because of the high mercury content in tuna.  Limit to 2 servings per week, according to the mayoclinic and other guides.

    I really, really miss sushi!
