Infant Seat and/or Convertible Car Seat

Hi.

So I am just starting to get ready to register (making my list and checking it twice) and have to admit that I am kinda clueless as a first time Mom.  My DH and I were just discussing car seats last night.  We are trying to be smart about things we get for the baby. We don't really want to get things that are unnecessary since we don't have alot of storage space...but of course we want to be sure to get those things that will keep our LO safe and happy.  Which brings me to my question... do we really need an infant car seat and a convertible car seat?  Or can we get away with just getting a convertible car seat with an infant insert?  Any reasons not to?  Any advice is greatly appreciated! :)

Thanks!

Re: Infant Seat and/or Convertible Car Seat

  • I recommend getting the infant seat. From what I understand, they are safer for newborns (even though a lot of convertible car seats state they can accommodate 5lbs and up). The best part of the infant carrier is that you can just carry the baby inside/click to the stroller etc without taking her out. My daughter outgrew her infant carrier early, so we were bummed about that. But we can just use it again for #2!

  • We love our infant car seat!  It's so convenient to be able to get DS in and out of the car without having to unbuckle him from the seat, especially since he always falls asleep in the car.  We've got a car seat adapter for our stroller, which makes the whole transfer process super easy.  It's also nice taking DS out in public and having a ready-made seat for him (like at church, or inside a shopping cart).

  • Ah ha!  Didn't think of the convience/portability factor!  Definitely something to take into consideration!  Thanks Ladies!  Big Smile
  • The infant seat is really worth it.  For me it was great for moving DD around from house to car to stroller to car, without having to wake her up if she was sleeping.  Also in the winter I loved it because I didn't have to deal with a snowsuit, we just put a cover on the seat.  Also we used our infant seat for almost the entire first year so we were able to really delay the purchase of our convertible.
  • I went straight to a convertible seat that is good for an infant (all of them aren't) - The First Years True Fit.  I'm happy with the choice.

  • We're planning to go straight to a convertible. I'm not really interested in carrying the baby around in the carrier (I intend to wear when possible anyway).

Of course, we may decide an infant seat is worth it in the end, but right now we're just goign to skip it. The trick is finding a seat that will properly fit a newborn. When you look at the convertible seats, you can pretty much tell which ones will NOT properly fit one. We've got an Evenflo Triumph Advance and I'm also planning on a First Year's True Fit.

  • went down the same road a few months ago.  You need the infant seat.  The convertible in rear facing is still too big.

  • Thanks Ladies!

You have all definitely given me food for thought!  :)
