Babies: 0 - 3 Months

My first skin color related comment...

LO and I were at TJ Maxx today and when we went to the cashier to check out she said, "He is so sweet! How old is he?" I told her he was just about 5 weeks old. Then she said, "Is he yours?"

Side note, I have dark skin but I am mixed, my mom is white and my dad is black. DH is white. So DS is 1/4 black. Meaning he looks white.

I wanted to say, "No, I stole him from that white lady over there..."

Arg. Who asks a lady with a baby if it is hers?

  • Im as white as Casper and my son has dark brown hair and dark brown eyes.  DH is half Hispanic and half French, so theres some darkness on his side (his hair is JET BLACK).  People at work "joke" all the time that I stole him from the grocery store.

  • Sorry. That's really stupid and insensitive.  I am white (and blonde) and DH is Japanese, so DS will probably look pretty Asian as he gets older.  I had to admit to DH while pregnant that I'm scared that he won't look like me and people will think he's not mine.  It's a dumb thing to care about, but I did/do.  Funny thing is, he looks really white, at least for now.
  • What an idiot! Why do people feel the need to say things like that?
  • I know exactly what you mean! I am white and my BF is mixed so our son is also 1/4 black but he just looks like he has a great tan . . people are always asking my BF if he is his son . . its aggravating!!

  • Some kids do have nannies who take them out...

  • DH and I are both very pale skinned and DS is darker skinned and hair.  I get the "milk man" thing.

I'm sure that's why she looked at me like I had three heads when I said he was mine, because she thought I was his nanny!

I don't know! Why can't they just say, "Cute baby!"

  • "Wow, that was rude. You must be so embarrassed!" My favourite comeback.

    Also- cute baby. ;)

  • I don't know that it's necessarily skin color related, unless she said it was...

my kids are the spit & image of me... there's no denying them... and I've been asked if they're mine if we're out during the workday.

  • That was really rude of her. You should have replied with that answer.  Funny!

  • He is a cute baby!

I'm half Asian (from my dad) and I remember in kindergarten being asked if I was adopted by a friend who saw my mom picking me up.  Another time, when we were in Mexico, a shop owner followed me around trying to speak to me in Japanese (which I don't speak, I'm half-Filipino) and when I went to my mom in the store and started talking to her, he didn't believe she was my mom at first.  We don't look much alike, obviously :)

We have found the humor in the situations and it's never bothered her (outwardly, at least) or me, but I can see why you'd be frustrated or offended by it.

  • Maybe she thought you were a caregiver or something ... not that it makes it right ... but people are idiots.
