Ferber method and teething

How do you deal with night wakings from teething?  Do you wait the same intervals?

We used the Ferber method for DS and he has been STTN for several weeks.  For the past few nights he's been waking whining more than crying.  He's drooling like crazy and gnawing on everything he can find.  Last night he was up at 1 whimpering.  I went in and gave him Tylenol and his pacifier back-I didn't wait the set time.  He sounded like he was in pain so I didn't want to make him wait.

I don't want to mess up my sleep training efforts, but if he's truly in pain I want to go help him.

Re: Ferber method and teething

  • When she is teething or sick I respond to and comfort her.  Last night she woke up at 1:30 and was wide awake and I think in pain.  I gave her tylenol and a very small bottle and it helped calm her down enough to go back to sleep.

When we have had similar setbacks before, it has not taken many nights to get back on track.  Comfort your LO now, and  his good sleeping habits should come back to him when he feels better.

  • I think your instincts are dead-on.  Ferber even mentions retraining after illness, teething, or travel, so I think he assumes that the rules don't apply when LO needs you.
  • DD was not feeling well the other night so I brought her in our bed.  She was back in her crib the next day with only a little fussing.  If she needs me then I will start all over again.  I'm lucky though that my DD adapts to change well.
