how bad is it that i sorta want insulin for GD

i'm diet controlled but due to my small size/wt, i'm not able to have as many carbs as most ppl with GD.  i'm NOT AT ALL afraid of needles so it doesn't seem too bad to give insulin :)

i'm doing pretty good diet wise with my numbers but i'm really strict on myself.   gawd i would love some more carbs!!!!!!!!!!

see, this post alone proves i'm loosing my mind on this diet.  can you tell i've never been on a diet in my life?

  • I am struggling as well.  My numbers are pretty borderline though.  Doc is giving me one more week to get it under control.  I had a salad for lunch and fat/sugar free pudding and I got a high number.  What I wouldn't give for a huge plate of pasta with chocolate cake.

What week are you on with diet alone?  I am starting week 3, today the doctor said I was borderline and he would give me one more week as well.  I asked him today if I could have a small piece of cake at my shower, he said "absolutely not".  I am so craving chocolate cake!!  ugh!

  • I hate to tell you this, but getting insulin doesn't mean you can load up on the carbs. I had a VERY strict diet while I was on insulin. I hope you don't have to go on insulin... it's nothing to wish for.

I am only on week 2. I can only get good numbers if I eat a tiny meal.  Then I am starving and couting down till snack time.  I have lost 3 lbs trying to control it.

  • I doubt that's how it works.  If you can't control your numbers with the diet then you'll get insulin to bring those numbers down, but you'd still be on the same diet.  If you ate more carbs then they'd have to give you more insulin which I doubt they really want to do with most people unless it's absolutely necessary.

You said you're not allowed as many carbs because of your size--- how many are you allowed?

  • I guess I should clarify that I don't want insulin, but I would love a plate of pasta and cake.  Probably evident though because I am trying hard enough that I am losing weight just to avoid it.

my post was directed at the OP.

It's not uncommon to lose weight while on the GD diet-- I think most everyone does.  What happens when you add more protein to your diet?  does it spike your numbers? I have to eat a lot of protein with my meals and snacks to make it and not start to feel really hungry.

Yesterday my afternoon snack was messed up and I only had some nuts and I was about to pass out by dinner time.  That was the first time I'd ever had that happen because I'm usually so good about getting in good snacks.  I can totally see how I wouldn't be able to handle it if I felt that way all the time, but normally something like 3/4 banana and a good amount of peanut butter will keep me full until the next meal.

I completely understand, my first week I lost 1 lb and was told they would put me on insulin if I didn't gain it back last week.  I added a protein shake as a secondary snack between either lunch and dinner or breakfast and I was able to gain it back.  It is really filling too, so I don't feel starved like I did that first week.  Best wishes to you!

  • I am totally in the same boat. I only get good numbers if I eat less than 20 carbs at any meal no matter what it is. I am just very very resistant I guess.

It looks to me from what most of you say you can eat apples, graham crackers, regular crackers, and other stuff in moderation but I can't eat any of that stuff.

It also looks like you eat, per the diet, about 120-150g carbs per day. I eat no more than 60-80 depending. It makes a big difference.

I want more insulin too. I have lost about 16lbs since starting the diet Jan. 1 and I have to keep the diet up for 26ish more weeks.

i am very aware that i can't just go on a carb-fest with insulin.  i'm a nurse so i know how insulin works...

i have done more restricting on my carbs than the dietian origionally gave me (ok'd by ob/gyn).  i have 1 serving with breakfast and snacks and 2 servings with meals.  no juice, oatmeal (i've tried every time/way), very little fruit, ect ect.  oh, and lots of protein with meals or i go too high (and i don't like meat so this is tricky)

i would just love to have a 'regular' gd allowance of carbs, that's all :)  i'm sure i will just continue with diet controlled till the end though which will be a blessing if thats how it stays.

i didn't mean to minimize insulin, it's just that i was venting :/

If you took in the recommended amt of carbs and your numbers were too high would your dr consider some other form of medication before insulin?  When I was trying to control GD with diet I found that I had to take in less carbs that allowed but since I've been on Glyburide twice a day I can get much closer to my carb allowance.  I don't go overboard, I just have what I was told I could have now.

yes shannon, my #'s would be too high.  my dr doesn't use other oral meds (which is fine by me).  i discussed cutting my carbs with my dr b/c for some silly reason the dietian didn't really take into acct my weight when figuring my diet.  to be more 'in line' with things, i need less carbs than average size pg women. my dr agreed with me that her diet wasn't fitted to my size and i shouldn't get as many carbs as most :(
