We use ours often enough that i boil water and fill it up and squirt it out till all the snot and boogers come out in the pan and then let it dry and squeeze it a few times ones its cooled before using it again and it gets out all the extra water left behind. We do this every few weeks and after every cold. Hot boiling water make all the boogers melt right out.
we just fill/empty with water a few times, but then again we rarely ever use ours. then we squeeze it a few times to make sure all the water is out, we never has issues with mildew.
My friend used her aspirator through a nasty cold her daughter had, and they always did the boiling water with soap, hang to dry thing. One night she depressed the bulb and it wouldn't reinflate....when she finally got it to blow up again, the bulb split open. The inside was covered with black mold. As soon as she told me that, all of our bulb syringes went into the trash and we bought the Graco battery operated one (for little snot sucking) and the NoseFrida for big snot sucking.
You really can't clean and drain a bulb syringe appropriately. It's a damp and warm place that has germies no matter what you do.
We got the nosefrida and we love it! It works so much better for us then the bulb aspirator. Also, you can take it apart to clean it and it will air dry. I wish we had gotten one sooner!
If you mix a bit of bleach with the water when you clean it you can help stop the growth of mold. This is what the pedi office told us. Just REALLY make sure its good and dry before you use it again.
