my unpopular opinion on taxes

NO ONE should get back a refund bigger than the amount they paid in taxes. That is not your money, it is mine. I worked my butt off for it.

PS Oklahoma State taxes suck.

  • Ummm ....  either you explained it wrong or your really dense.
  • I love when people are like "yay im getting so much $$ back"

well duh because you paid too much, i mean you can get  credit for certain things but getting a lot of money back is not the goal.....

  • I think I understand what she means. The year my friend had her baby she made maybe 10K total that year but got back over 6K. There's no way she paid 6K in taxes. So....part of her tax return was money other people paid in.

  • I am just fed up with people I know who paid in like $1500 and are getting $8000. That is not their money. I understand if it is like a homebuyer credit, etc. But I paid in 3 times what they did and I am not getting it back, and certainly not getting more than I paid. A big refund is not what I want, I enjoy my money throughout the year thank you, but others getting more than their "own" money back just really gets to me. I understand if they are lower income, getting back what they paid, but not $6000 more than that. Sorry flame if you want. That is my opinion.

exactly and I am sick of people IRL bragging about how little they paid and how much they are getting.

  • Completely agree! If they are low income, give them a refund of anything they paid in (although if their W4s are correct they wouldn't have paid anything in the first place) but I don't understand how tax filing became yet another way for the government to give people free money.

  • I agree!

  • What about people who itemize mortgage interest & have credits from college, etc?  If they only paid in X amount but those things are XXXX amount should they still only get X amount back?

Taxes are about more than just what you paid in on state and federal during the year.  Personally, i'd rather pay more in during the year and get a good chunk back at the end of the year.  I love taxes.

We rarely break even on state though, $21 back this year.

We are in the lame category where we make too much to be 'low income' but not quite enough to be middle class.  Kinda get screwed sometimes.

Mito-Disorder has been mentioned

  • There is a girl my DH works with (she's a server) and she is ALWAYS giving away shifts because she "doesn't feel like working."  Well, I don't "feel like working" either, nor does my DH "feel like working" and spending valuable time away from me and our kids, but guess what...we HAVE to work in order to survive and pay our bills.  Meanwhile we are getting hardly anything back and she's getting $6000 back!!!!  It makes me so angry because she doesn't deserve this money!  As soon as she found out how much she was getting she gave away all her shifts that week, meanwhile she is on WIC and food stamps, but she doesn't "have" to work so why should she.  Makes me angry!

Don't get me wrong, if you are a "worker" and still need government assistance I am ALL for it, but do not abuse it or the people who work for what we have

So I am right there with ya girl!

  • Whatever, I am happy to be getting a huge refund. And I already bragged about it. Most of it was the homebuyer credit. Is it fair? Maybe not. Is it awesome for me? YEP!

Yes. Paying interest was a choice they made. If they couldn't afford to pay it then they shouldn't have gotten the loan. Why should the extra money I paid in and didn't get back go to pay someone else's interest while I have to pay ALL the interest on my student loans?

Like I said, i understand the homebuyer credits.

But one of the girls IRL that prompted me to share my opinion is living on child support in government housing and getting food stamps. So I KNOW the homebuyer credit is not involved.

  • How about we brag about how much we paid in taxes?!  We paid 43K in taxes. GO US! I would much rather pay a crap ton than being poor enough to get earned income credit. That is not a good place to be.

  • what the f are you talking about? Huh?

it's either wayyy too late for me to be reading it, or you aren't making sense. You get back what you OVER pay. I pay sales tax, property tax, income tax, tax on interest for my house and student loans... so I get a refund. and it's large. If I took the time to calculate how much I owe I could have that withdrawn from my check, but really I'd rather be safe than sorry.

  • I agree with the op.  Most people aren't understanding what she meant.  She's talking about when you get credits that make your refund more than you ever even paid in to the gov't in the first place.

I agree that you should certainly be allowed to get a refund of 100% of what you paid in, assuming you have enough deductions, etc.  I don't agree that you should get back every penny you paid in, plus more that others paid in.  I agree with the poster that taxes shouldn't be about finding another way for the government to give handouts.

It's not about size of refund.  It's not about EIC.  It's simply that if you paid $4,000 to the government why in the heck should the government refund you $8,000?

  • Why should the middle class get 8K back if they buy real estate? If you can afford to buy real estate, then you don't need 8K from the IRS. This is especially true if you currently own a place which the IRS is also giving you money for.

I would much rather give 5K to a low income family with three kids making 16K. It seems like they need it more.

Yep. And I partially agree b/c DH and I totally missed out - by only a few months - on a lot of the "incentives." But I do see this point and the OP's point. Definitely.

We do overpay, though. Just to be safe. And nope, we don't get it all back, either.

Not me...if you really want that "chunk of money" you COULD set that aside yourself and actually earn the interest off it.

This.  I have posted on taxes before and, if you are getting a refund, the government thanks you for your interest-free loan to them for the year.
