NBR: Carowinds vs. Busch Gardens

DH and I are planning a overnight trip this spring, just the two of us. Holly will stay with my parents (for her first overnight stay away from us). We are big roller coaster people, and were going to go to Busch Gardens, since we had planned to go there in '08, but I got pregnant. But I was looking at the website, and it seems like there's just not as much as I remember. The Big Bad Wolf, which was fun, is no longer there. But they do have some other awesome roller coasters.

DH suggested Carowinds, which I remember from my childhood as not all that great and kind of cheesy. But I checked out their website, and there's actually a lot of new stuff there, and some fun looking rides. Since it's in Charlotte (or near there), we could drop Holly off in Kernersville, so for the love of God, my parents could keep her at their house, like my mom has been pestering me about. If we went to BG, we'd probably have them come to our house and stay with her.

Has anyone been to either any time in the last couple of years? What did you think?

Re: NBR: Carowinds vs. Busch Gardens

  • I don't have a lot of advice b/c I haven't been to Carowinds in a few years, but I agree that the last time I was there it was getting kind of boring. DH and I had a trip planned to Busch Gardens but then I got pregnant (I've never been, but DH loves it), so that was cancelled and we were both sad- we are huge roller coaster fans too!

I guess I need to check out Carowind's new rides, I know they are under new management, so maybe it's more fun now. But if it were me, I'd probably pick Busch Gardens. And I'm jealous, that sounds so fun!

  • I prefer Busch Gardens, personally. I just like the way it is set up with all the different countries. Of course the beer garden in Germany is my fave! There is also King's Dominion in VA too. Whatever you choose, have fun!!!
  • I haven't been to Busch Gardens in years, but I just read Anhauser Busch is selling their parks.  I'm not sure of the time-line, but perhaps that's why not many rides have been opened.

I do love Williamsburg, so I'm partial to Busch-Gardens.  A few years ago we went to Carowinds and it was pretty fun with a few new roller coasters.  It was definitely do-able in a day.

  • The last time I went to Carrowinds was when I was 12 or 13 I think. While they had a few good coasters that I remember, it was not the best ever. If I had the choice, I would pick Busch Gardens, but that is because I have heard awesome things about that park. I have never been, so I can't honestly say from personal experience. Have fun!! The best coasters I have ever been on was at Magic Mountain in CA. OMG. SO scary. Not like you can just skip off to Cali though!

  • Not that it's exactly warm right now, but I just remember Carowinds being a big, hot block of asphalt with rides scattered around.  I haven't been in several years, but last time I went I was pretty bored because there was A LOT for little kids from what I remember.  DH and I went to Busch Gardens last year and had a great time.  It seems more adult to me, and there are lots of trees and landscaping that made it much more appealing to me.  I thought there were plenty of thrill rides.  The Griffin was INSANE!  I would choose to go back there hands down over Carowinds. Of course you have to weigh the convenience reason Carowinds would work for your situation too. Smile
  • I haven't been to carowinds in many years but have been to busch gardens in the past 5 years as well as Kings Dominion. Let me say somethign to my mom and sister to see if they remember which one has more and better roller coasters....i do remember there eing some really always once at kings dominion. I'm so jealous!

  • Another vote for Busch Gardens!

I think the rides at both places are nice.  However, IMO the atmosphere at Busch Gardens is more pleasant.

  • There are only 4 roller coasters at BG now.. there are more than that at Carowinds, though some of them (Thunder Road, Cyclone, the Hurler, etc), are not as exciting to me. The atmosphere at BG is definitely nicer.. It might come down to who has the cheaper admission tickets.. :-)

    thanks everyone!
