Babies: 0 - 3 Months

People touching baby's face and hands...

What do you do when people touch (or try to touch) your baby's face and hands?  The receptionist at my midwife's office reached out and grabbed my baby's hands today, and then my baby stuck her fingers straight in her mouth.  Ugh!

What do you do/say when people touch your baby?  (If you'd rather they not...)

  • I always put little mittens on my LO's hands whenever we go out to avoid people who do that!

Ah, great idea! People definitely go for the hands more often than the face.

  • We are pretty superstitious where I live so people are always asking to touch DD but they always just touch her hair. I think it's pretty common sense not to touch face and especially not hands! Of course some people lack it...

ditto I also found that having DD in a carrier didn't allow people to just touch her. DD will be 3 months tomorrow and I still hate peole grabbing her little hands. It's still flu season and who know where their hands have been. I know FIL does NOT wash his hands after using the bathroom. So gross
  • I always have mitts on DS' hands when we are out.  I think if a stranger went in to touch his face I'd throat punch them.

  • You'd think someone at the midwife's office would know better.

I have no problem asking people not to touch him, I apparently grew some balls when I had him cause if it's in his best interest I have no problem telling people what's up.

  • I ordered one of these and put it on my carseat

Works like a charm, you can't miss the sign, and I don't have to say a word...people are always asking me where I got it from.

  • At this point, when I take LO out, he is still covered in a blanket (it is FREEZING here).  So, people have to ask for me to uncover him.  I haven't had anyone try to touch him yet.

  • I have a sign that hangs on her carseat and we haven't had a single stranger touch her yet! It's been a few times that people have stretched their arms out to her and see the sign and then don't touch her. It is so nice to have that sign so that it says it and I don't have to!

Our pedi said people in her office do it all the time and it drives her nuts.

She recommended mittens/shirts that cover the hands.

  • This happens all the time in public areas. I havent had my little boy yet but i do have quite a bit of experiance with this topic due to the fact that me and my two younger sisters are all 8 1/2 years apart. When i would take my youngest sister to the store people would stick there fingers in her face and touch her hands non stop. Most of the time i tell them that she doesnt like it when people she doesnt really know touch her...that tends to scare them. But on ocassion people sneak by the guard and touch before i can say anything. Due to these situations I started packing hand wipes in the diaper bag...for the just in cases. Good Luck.
