Mommy's who breastfeed....Am I in trouble?

My LO is 2 weeks today and last night I tried giving her a bottle and she will not take it.  UH OH am I in trouble?  What are some suggestions to get her to take a bottle?  I only want her to take one for when I go back to work and if for some reason I step out otherwise I dont mind breastfeeding.  I never had this problem with my son he ate whatever was givin to him lol

  • I would keep trying but maybe she does not like the nipple you are using. You may need to try a different nipple brand.

  • Try having someone else give it to him - sometimes they won't take it from mommy because they want the good stuff!!  GL
  • Were *you* trying? Neither of my kids would take one from me, but would take them fine from DH, daycare, etc.

  • There are tons of different nipples I would try another.  If you have a few more weeks before you go back to work then maybe just wait a week or two.  She might be fine with a little more time.

  • Yes I had DH try to feed her and I have tried 2 different nipples.  I will keep trying Im just worried cause i thought they said if the baby doesnt take a bottle by 2 weeks they may never take one.  Im not sure how true that is but thats why I was worried.
  • Yup - like everyone said.  Try having someone else give her a bottle.  DD#1 took bottles ok, not great.  DD#2 would only take them from people she knew (took the sitter three weeks - two days a week for 5 hours - before she'd take a bottle from her at 6 months).  She only liked them if they were warm, not room temperature and with a specific nipple.  She also preferred to be held facing out and sitting up, basically nothing like BF.  It just takes some work to figure out how to get him to take them.  Oh yeah, and DD#2 never ever took a bottle if I was even in the house.  Somehow, she always seemed to know and would just refuse completely.  Yeah, she was a boob girl.  Still, she took them when I was working - at least enough to not starve.  She never ate well with bottles, but she survived.

I've never heard that. I don't believe there's any hard fast rule about at some point they just won't ever take one. Don't let it worry you. Just keep trying, eventually something will work.

Try giving the bottle with DD facing away from you.

I wouldn't worry about the two week thing.    In fact it is typically only recommended to introduce a bottle between 3-5 weeks.    Your baby is still very young.  You have time!

  • I wouldnt worry yet.  Alot of people don't even introduce a bottle until 2-3 weeks.

  • Like PPs said, try different bottles/different nipples. I didn't start DD on a bottle until she was 5-6 weeks old. The third time/bottle was the charm. Now she'll take anything!
  • DS was hesitant at first but I had DH squeeze the nipple to drip some milk into his mouth so he'd get the idea... seemed to work.
  • I use Avent bottles. I started using the Avent pacifiers when he was a couple days old. We didnt introduce the bottle until he was 5 weeks old. When we did he took right to it, i think the pacifiers helped since the nipple was the same. He has only had a few bottles because I EBF, but I wanted to make sure he would be ready for when I go back to work. Maybe try getting him use to the brand of bottles by trying those pacifiers? GL

  • We introduced one at 5 weeks and my DS took it right away and I was so nervous because I had heard horror stories. We use Born Free bottles and my LO has had no problem. Seems like the flow is good. Hope it gets better for you....many people have had LOs that reject the bottle, but if you keep trying eventually they will take it.?

  • At first I had the same problem as you.  I noticed that if I put my daughter in her car seat or her swing she would take the bottle.  I have no idea why this worked but it did.  HTH!

  • I use The FirstYears Breatflow bottles...the nipple is suppose to resemble the breast. You should google the bottle to get a better idea as to what it looks like. I think its the best bottle out there!

  • I agree with the other posters...try the breastflow bottles.  They have to suck at the nipple the same way that they BF.

  • We didn't introduce until 8 weeks and DD is fine so I wouldn't worry too much about the 2 weeks thing. We use the Playtext Ventaire Advance wide bottles with slow nipples and she's done great.
