Should I call the emergency line?

Baby is 7 weeks old, last night he started having a stuffy nose, little bit of a cough and acting a little more fussy than usual. I used some little noses saline spray to try and help him breath a little better, nursed him as usual and he went to sleep. Slept great from 11pm-6am (this is 1-2 hours more than usual, and I checked on him through the night)

This morning he seemed happy when he woke up, ate normally, since then he has been alternating nursing and sleeping all morning, still with a stuffy nose and occasional cough (like maybe 5 times this whole day). He has not had a fever.

Called the doctor to be safe, but they are closed due to the two blizzards we just had, should I call the emergency number or just wait until tomorrow when the office will likely be open?

Re: Should I call the emergency line?

  • call if it will put your mind at ease, but it sounds like he just has a normal winter cold. if it doesn't sound like it's in his lungs, there isn't much that the docs will do for you anyway besides tell you to keep using the nose spray

  • I can hear a little rasp but I cant tell if that is his nose or lungs, if that makes sense.
  • listen to when he coughs, if he sounds phlemy or if he's coughing up mucous then it's in his lungs

you can also put your ear to his chest and listen to his lungs when he's breathing but that's more difficult

  • My DS is the same way right now. I just had him at the pedi. on Tues. He listened to his lungs and said they sounded great and it was just a cold. He told me to run a humidifier and vaporizer and to use saline drops/spray. It's no fun and I feel bad for him. I would just keep an extra eye on him and call for an appt. tomorrow. Take him into the bathroom and run a hot shower. That helped my DS.

Just curious if you can hear mucous and sounds phlegmy what could that mean. That is how my DS sounds. He was just at the pedi. though.

  • If it was me I wouldn't call but if you would feel better checking then do it.  Better safe than sorry when your a new mommy.  My LO has had a stuffy nose and little cough too and it only lasted a few days.  Stuffy nose he has pretty much had for a few weeks now.  I just keep cleaning it out and making sure he can breath ok.  I think it is just the weather.

DS had a cold and i took him to the dr. the dr put his head to DS chest and said he was listening to hear if his lungs sounded phlemy. then he used his stethoscope. he said if i got concerned i could try to listen myself but that it might be hard to know what I was looking for. that's when he said to try listening to DS cough instead

it never got worse and he never got phlemy so i'm not sure what they would have done if it did

  • T has a stuffy nose now too and has been eating and sleeping all morning (more than usual.)  I am not calling the doctor and I would definitely not call the emergency line.  It's just a cold.
  • Thanks everyone, yeah I cant really hear anything in his lungs, so I think we will just keep an eye on him and keep taking his temp and call tomorrow, not like he could get in to see the pediatrician today anyway (no one can really get out on the roads) and I doubt they would say take him to the ER, so really there is not much point in calling the emergency line.
  • How is lo breathing? Is it labored and shallow? Or is it just stuffy? If he is working to breath, I would not hesitate to call or take him in.

  • Same problem here!  I also took LO to the ped and they listened to her lungs and it sounded clear also.  So, they told me to jsut use the saline drops and bulb. It sucks because now everyone at home is sick with a cold!

  • if there is a PEDIATRIC Urgent care in your area, you could take him to be checked there tonight, if you are at all concerned. Those are specifically designed for when the regular drs office is closed, yet it is not a life-threatening emergency type of thing (where you would head to the ER).The difference from regular urgent care clinics is that there are experienced pediatricians and equipment specifically tailored to infants and children.

but I would say as long as he is sleeping well, eating and not fussing a lot (plus NO FEVER  - by the way, what thermometer are you using?) you could wait till tomorrow AM for your regular pediatrician. But if you are worried - take him to the urgent care

good luck, i hope he gets better soon
